New MetroStars coach Octavio Zambrano (left) and GM Nick Sakiewicz hope Steve Shak can turn their team around. AP

ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Seeking to recover from the worst season by any team in Major League Soccer's four-year history, the New York-New Jersey MetroStars on Sunday selected UCLA defender Steve Shak with the first pick in the league's SuperDraft.

With the second pick in the draft, the Kansas City Wizards selected defender Nick Garcia from the University of Indiana.

Officials from the 12 MLS teams gathered at the Radisson Bahia Mar Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the six-round 2000 SuperDraft. The new format takes the place of MLS' collegiate and supplemental drafts, and includes all collegiate, Project-40 and professional players who have entered the draft pool, regardless of domestic or international playing status.

Marquee player signings by the league from outside the P-40 and college ranks will still be distributed through MLS' player allocation process.

Introducing Sunday's draft, MLS commissioner Don Garber revealed that Spanish-language network Telemundo would broadcast MLS games in 2000, replacing Univision, which had broadcast games the previous four seasons.
