CHICAGO (AP) -- An April 1 deadline was set Friday by the U.S. Soccer Federation for groups to say they will apply to form a first-division women's league.

John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel, said last month he had raised $40 million, mostly from television companies, to make a bid for a league that would be called Women's United Soccer Association.

Major League Soccer also is formulating a proposal.

The USSF set a May 1 deadline for completed applications and said its national council will decide the winning group at its annual meeting, Aug. 16-20 in New York.
