CHICAGO (AP) -- World Cup stars Michelle Akers and Briana Scurry, both nursing injuries, were not included on the 18-player team U.S. coach April Heinrichs selected for the prestigious Algarve Cup.

Akers, the veteran midfielder whose presence has been missed in recent games, underwent nasal surgery Monday. She is expected back for the United States' next domestic match on April 8 against Iceland in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Goalkeeper Scurry is sidelined by a leg injury. Heinrichs used seven goalies in training camp, then chose 21-year-old Siri Mullinix and 19-year-old Jen Branam for the Algarve Cup roster. Both have extensive xperience with the U.S. under-21 team, but have just two full national team appearances between them.

Heinrichs on Monday chose 14 of the 20 players who helped win the World Cup last year, including Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Kristine Lilly and co-captains Julie Foudy and Carla Overbeck.

Added to that group were forward Christie Welsh and defender Danielle Slaton. Welsh scored the only U.S. goal in a 2-1 loss to Norway on Feb. 9. Slaton played for the American team that won the Australia Cup in January.

The Americans will play Denmark on March 14 and Sweden on March 16 in the Algarve tournament, which also has drawn such powerful teams at Norway and China. The final, between group winners, is March 18.
