MLS to apply for women's pro league Posted: Thursday March 30, 2000 04:49 PM
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- The stage is set for a showdown over women's professional soccer in the United States. The five-year old men's league, Major League Soccer, officially announced Thursday that it is sending a letter to the United States Soccer Federation notifying the sport's governing body of the league's intent to submit an application for a Division I professional women's soccer league. "MLS believes that the formation of a women's professional soccer league creates a unique opportunity for the entire sport of soccer in the United States," said MLS commissioner Don Garber. "We are great believers in women's soccer and feel we have the experience, resources and operational expertise to effectively create and manage a professional women's soccer league." In February, a separate group led by John Hendricks, chairman and CEO of Discovery Communications, announced the formation of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA). Hendricks said investors in the league already included Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Comcast Corporation. U.S. Soccer has stated that after all qualified and interested groups have been identified, a completed application and all related documentation must be submitted to the federation by May 1, 2000. After a review process and full report, U.S. Soccer's National Council will vote on sanctioning for the women's professional league at its annual general meeting August 16-20 in New York City.
