Akers has shoulder surgery Posted: Thursday April 06, 2000 05:49 PM
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- U.S. soccer star Michelle Akers underwent successful shoulder surgery Wednesday and will undergo a three-month rehabilitation. The veteran midfielder should be ready for Olympic preparation this summer. Dr. Rob Palumbo repaired damage from a dislocation to Akers' right shoulder suffered on Feb. 27. Akers was hurt when she fell after colliding with a goalkeeper during a training match. Palumbo performed arthroscopic surgery and said there were no complications. "She needs to rest and protect her shoulder for three to four weeks and then she'll begin a progressive rehabilitation program," Palumbo said. "We expect her to be back training no later than July. "When she woke up, the first thing she asked me was whether she could ride her horse. I told her that would have to wait." Akers, 34, has scored 104 goals in 147 international matches for the United States. She played in the team's first match in 1985, as well as three Women's World Cups and the 1996 Olympics. Injuries are nothing new to Akers, who has undergone a dozen knee surgeries, had an orbital fracture that required surgery, as well as battling chronic fatigue syndrome.
