Not quite the same Iceland bounces back from 8-0 loss to hold U.S. to 0-0 tiePosted: Sunday April 09, 2000 06:58 PM
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Just three days after the United States routed Iceland 8-0 in women's soccer, the teams played a scoreless tie Saturday night. Iceland goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir made several spectacular saves. She made six saves in the first half and was equally as impressive in the second half, turning away several U.S. scoring chances, many by forward Tiffeny Milbrett. Helgadottir had an impressive save on Milbrett's header in the 77th minute. Two minutes later, Mia Hamm blasted a shot from 20 yards that went high off the goal. Helgadottir closed the game with a diving save of Brandi Chastain's shot with less than 15 seconds left. A crowd of 10,315 watched the game at Ericsson Stadium. On Wednesday, a team of mostly U.S. reserves easily beat Iceland in a match closed to the public at Davidson College. Saturday night's game completed a week in Charlotte for the U.S. team, which is training for the Sydney Olympics. The team will take a week off, then reconvene in San Diego on April 17.
