Moving on U.S. ties Canada, reaches semis of qualifying tournamentPosted: Thursday April 27, 2000 04:59 PM
HERSHEY, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The U.S. men's soccer team moved one victory from an Olympic berth Tuesday night with a 0-0 tie against Canada in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. The United States will face Guatemala in the semifinals Friday night with the winner qualifying for the Sydney Games. After the Americans routed Honduras 3-0, then Canada lost 2-0 to Honduras, all the United States needed was a tie to win the group and advance. U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard, playing in place of Adin Brown who was out with a sore right knee, recorded two saves. Canada's Mike Frank had three saves as the Americans outshot the Canadians 11-7. Canada's best scoring opportunity came in the 58th minute when Dwayne DeRosario beat defender Steve Cherundolo at the top of the penalty box and booted a shot high. The United States' Ben Olsen shot from close to the goal in 79th minute, but Frank deflected it. Two players were ejected after an altercation at 45 minutes. Canada's Steve Kindel pulled at American Brian Dunseth's shirt as Dunseth lay on the ground after a fall, and Dunseth leaped angrily to his feet and threw Kindel to the ground, resulting in the ejection. Officials said Dunseth will miss Friday's game and may face other penalties. In an earlier contest, Mexico moved to the top of Group E with a 3-0 shutout of Panama. Rafael Marquez, Alejandro Nava and Emilio Mora each scored in the first half to lead Mexico, which moved past Guatemala into first place on goal differential. Mexico will face Honduras in one semifinal on Friday. The semifinal winners will square off on Sunday.
