Rebound U.S. routs Canada 9-1 at Pacific CupPosted: Friday June 02, 2000 10:13 AM
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Just 48 hours after losing 1-0 to China in a replay of last year's World Cup final, the U.S. women's soccer team hit back Friday by thrashing Canada 9-1 in a round 2 clash at the Pacific Cup. Tiffeny Milbrett and Cindy Parlow scored three goals apiece, while Lorrie Fair slotted two goals in two minutes early in the second period as the U.S. turned a 4-0 halftime lead into an eight-goal mauling in the North America derby. The Sydney Football Stadium result mirrored the highest previous winning margin in head-to-heads against Canada, a 9-1 result in 1995. Canadian striker Christine Sinclair scored a consolation goal in the 81st minute, rifling a ball in from the right of the posts after U.S. goalkeeper Jen Branam had parried an earlier shot on goal. The Americans, world and Olympic champions, were scheduled to play New Zealand at Campbelltown, in western Sydney, on Sunday. Earlier, Yasuyo Yamagishi lobbed a 20-meter curling ball into the top right corner of the net in the first minute of injury time as Japan grabbed a 2-1 win against New Zealand. The Kiwis grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when striker Amanda Crawford pounced on a Japanese defensive error in the goal box. Replacement Kae Nishina scored an equalizer in the 69th minute and the scores remained locked 1-1 at the end of regular time. Both teams were coming off first-round losses, the Japanese losing 1-0 to host Australia and Canada defeating New Zealand 2-1. Australia was scheduled to play China later Friday.
