Germans, Scots, Czechs notch qualifying victories

(AP) -- Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the Czech Republic won with shutouts Saturday as 42 European countries played qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup.

England's coach, Kevin Keegan, resigned after his team lost 1-0 to Germany in the last game at Wembley Stadium before the 77-year-old arena is demolished.

Germany (2-0), which has never lost a World Cup qualifier on the road, took the lead in Group Nine, six points ahead of England.

Italy moved atop Group Eight by beating Romania 3-0, 1998 World Cup semifinalist Netherlands did all of its scoring in the final 21 minutes in a 4-0 defeat of Cyprus, Spain beat Israel 2-0, and the Czech Republic topped Iceland 4-0 with two goals each from Pavel Nedved and Jan Koller.

Yugoslavia's game against Russia was postponed because of political turmoil in Belgrade. The match has not been rescheduled.

Saturday's other results were: Slovenia 2, Luxembourg 1; Switzerland 5, Faeroe Islands 1; Portugal 1, Ireland 1; Estonia 2, Andorra 1; Bulgaria 3, Malta 0; Northern Ireland 1, Denmark 1; Slovakia 1, Moldova 0; Sweden 1, Turkey 1; Ukraine 3, Armenia 2; Poland 3, Belarus 1; Wales 1, Norway 1; Belgium 4, Latvia 0; Scotland 2, San Marino 0; Austria 1, Liechtenstein 0; Georgia 4, Lithuania 0; Greece 1, Finland 0; and Paraguay 2, Colombia 0..

In a game played Friday, Djordji Hristov scored twice as Macedonia beat Azerbaijan 3-0 in Group Four.

Reigning World Cup and European champion France played a 0-0 draw at South Africa in an exhibition game Saturday.

Paraguay played Colombia in a South American game later Saturday.

The United States plays Costa Rica in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday. A U.S. victory advances the team to next year's regional qualifying finals.

Group One

Slovenia 2, Luxembourg 1

At Luxembourg, Zlatko Zahovic and Zeljko Milinovic scored in the last six minutes of the first half for Slovenia (1-0-1). Jeff Strasser scored for Luxembourg (0-2).

Switzerland 5, Faeroe Islands 1

At Zurich, Kubilay Tuerkyilmaz converted three penalty kicks for the Swiss (1-1), who trailed after four minutes when John Petersen scored for the visitors (0-1-1).

Group Two

Netherlands 4, Cyprus 0

At Nicosia, Clarence Seedorf scored in the 69th and 77th minutes, and Patrick Kluivert added two late goals for the visiting Dutch (1-0-1). Cyprus is 1-1.

Portugal 1, Ireland 1 At Lisbon, Matt Holland's goal with 17 minutes left gave Ireland (0-0-2) the draw. Sergio Conceicao put the hosts (1-0-1) ahead in the 55th minute.

Group Three

Czech Republic 4, Iceland 0 At Teplice, Koller scored for the group-leading hosts (2-0) in the 18th and 41st minutes, and Nedved tallied in the 44th and 80th minutes. Iceland is 0-2.

Denmark 1, N. Ireland 1

At Belfast, David Healy put Northern Ireland (1-0-1) up seven minutes before halftime, but Dennis Rommedahl tied it for the visitors (1-0-1) with 30 minutes left.

Bulgaria 3, Malta 0

At Sofia, Georgi Ivanov headed in two goals and Svetoslav Todorov added another header in the last minute for Bulgaria (1-1). Malta is 0-2.

Group Four

Slovakia 1, Moldova 0

At Chisinau, Szilard Nemeth lobbed in the only goal with 12 minutes remaining for visiting Slovakia (2-0), which took the group lead. Moldova has lost both its games.

Turkey 1, Sweden 1

At Goteburg, Tayfur Havutcu's penalty kick in injury time gave Turkey (1-0-1) the road draw. Henrik Larsson scored his 12th goal for Sweden (1-0-1).

Group Five

Poland 3, Belarus 1

At Lodz, Radoslaw Kaluzny scored in the 24th, 62nd and 74th minutes as Poland (2-0) moved atop the group. Nikolai Rydnyuk scored for Belarus (1-1) in the 37th.

Norway 1, Wales 1

At Cardiff, Thorsein Helstad's goal with 10 minutes to play allowed Norway (0-0-2) to avoid the upset. Nathan Blake put Wales (0-1-1) ahead in the 60th minute with a header.

Ukraine 2, Armenia 2

At Yerevan, Andriy Shevchenko's two goals rallied visiting Ukraine (1-1). Artur Petrosian scored twice for Armenia (0-1-1).

Group Six

Scotland 2, San Marino 0

At San Marino, Matt Elliot and Don Hutchinson scored two minutes apart in the second half for group leader Scotland (2-0). San Marino is 0-1.

Belgium 4, Latvia 0

At Riga, Marc Wilmots, Bob Peeters, Jurgan Cavens and Gert Verheyen scored for visiting Belgium (1-0-1). Latvia is 0-2.

Group Seven

Spain 2, Israel 0

At Madrid, Gerard Lopez scored in the 22nd minute and Fernando Hierro in the 53rd for Spain (2-0). Israel is 1-1.

Austria 1, Liechtenstein 0

At Vaduz, Thomas Floegel's goal 20 minutes in allowing Austria to win its opening qualifier. Liechtenstein is 0-2.

Group Eight

Italy 3, Romania 0

At Milan, Filippo Inzaghi and Marco Delvecchio had goals four minutes apart, and Francesco Totti also scored before halftime for Italy (1-0-1). Romania is 1-1.

Georgia 4, Lithuania 0

At Kaunas, Temuri Ketsbaia scored two goals and Giorgi Kinkladze and Archil Arvelanze added the others for visiting Georgia (1-0). Lithuania is 0-2.

Group Nine

Germany 1, England 0

At Wembley, Dietmar Hamann scored on a free kick in the 14th minute to drop England to 0-1.

Greece 1, Finland 0 At Athens, Nikos Lymberopoulos scored in the 59th minute. Both teams are 1-1.
