RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- The former coach of Brazil's national soccer team told police Friday he was blackmailed by a former business associate who accused him of evading taxes, a local news agency reported.

Wanderley Luxemburgo spoke to Rio police Friday as part of their tax-evasion investigation into his finances. His former partner, Renata Moura Alves, is also expected to testify this month, Estado news agency reported.

Luxemburgo, who was fired last month for his poor performance as coach, handed Police Chief Carlos Heitor Sanches a cassette allegedly containing a conversation in which Alves' lawyer promised that Alves would halt the accusations against Luxemburgo in exchange for 1.5 million reals (U.S. $800,000), Estado said.

Luxemburgo has denied accusations leveled at him by Alves, who told police she helped him cheat on his taxes. She also accused him of running an illegal scheme selling soccer players and buying apartments and cars with the undeclared profits.

Authorities have sifted through Luxemburgo's finances but have so far proven nothing.

Police refused Friday to confirm the news agency report.
