Late Hernandez goal lifts America

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- America defeated the Pumas of the National Autonomous University of Mexico 2-1 on Sunday, a day after Cruz Azul achieved a victory that propelled the team into the top spot alongside reigning leader Toluca in Mexico's winter soccer tournament.

America pulled off its victory with a goal by Luis Hernandez in the last minute of the game. Victor Santibanez scored the other in the 37th minute.

Scoring for he Pumas was Paraguayan player Pablo Caballero, who made a goal in the 85th minute.

The game took place in the Azteca stadium in Mexico city before 60,000 spectators.

The win gives America a total of 18 points in Group 4, while the Pumas have 15 points in Group 2.

America has won 11 points in its last six encounters, since Argentine coach Alfio Basile took over the team.

Cruz Azul defeated Morelia 3-1 on Saturday to tie reigning leader Toluca with 26 points, the highest achieved so far in the tournament. Toluca's point total remained at 26 after losing 3-2 to Irapuato on Saturday.

Cruz Azul, Toluca and Morelia are all in Group 1. Morelia now has 23 points.

In other Sunday play, Santos Laguna and Guadalajara tied 3-3. Jared Borgetti, of Santos Laguna, scored his 14th goal of the tournament and remains the top scorer.

Brazilian player Carlos Augusto Gomez and Chilean Rodrigo Ruiz scored the other goals for the team.

Scoring two goals for Guadalajara was Gustavo Napoles. A third came on an own goal by Santos Laguna's Jorge Campos.

Also Sunday, Leon tied Atlante 1-1. Brazilian Adelino Bastista scored the first goal for Leon in the 25th minute and Argentine Carlos Casartelli scored a goal for Atlante in the 46th.

In Cruz Azul's victory Saturday, Brazilian player Julio Cesar Pinheiro scored two goals, in the 24th and 53rd minutes of the game. Omar Rodriguez scored the third goal in the 33rd minute.

Honduran player Carlos Pavon scored Morelia's one goal.

Cruz Azul was able to take advantage of the expulsion of Morelia's Brazilian forward Alex Fernandez in the 29th minute of the game, leaving the team with only 10 players.

Toluca's loss to Irapuato came after Toluca lost Paraguayan forward Jose Saturnino Cardozo, who was expelled in the 10th minute of the game.

Irapuato rose to 20 points in Group 2 with the victory, to tie with the Monterrey Tigers.

In other Saturday games, Necaxa defeated Monterrey 2-1 and Puebla defeated Celaya 2-1. Necaxa now has 23 points in Group 3, while Monterrey remains with 17 in the same group.

The victory was Puebla's third of the championship and brought the team to 12 points, in last place in Group 3. Celaya, also with 12 points, remained last in Group 2.

In Guadalajara, the Tigers of the University of Nuevo Leon tied Atlas 1-1. The Tigers lead Group 2 with 21 points, while Atlas is third in Group 2, with 17 points.
