RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) -- The death of a 14-year-old supporter in crowd violence following the Flamengo-Vasco da Gama match overshadowed the weekend's soccer in Brazil.

In Argentina, Almagro celebrated the news that Diego Maradona will take over as general manager by losing again while in Paraguay, Francisco Ferreira scored four goals for Cerro Porteno in its 7-0 drubbing of Cerro Cora.

BRAZIL

The weekend's program was overshadowed when a 14-year-old fan was killed after the Flamengo-Vasco da Gama derby in Rio de Janeiro.

Flavio Augusto Marinho was shot and killed as fans of the two bitter rivals fought near the Maracana stadium after the match on Friday night, police said. Another supporter was taken to hospital after being severely beaten.

Other clashes were reported nearby.

Media reports said that in one incident, at least a hundred youths went on the rampage, robbing and mugging everyone in their path. Several people were reported to have been hit by cars as they tried to escape the mayhem by running into the road.

Flamengo's 4-0 win in the Joao Havelange Cup match was its second in a week following the appointment of veteran coach Mario Zagallo.

It lifted Flamengo to 15th and maintained its chances of reaching the tournament's knockout stage.

Former World Cup coach Carlos Alberto Parreira had a less happy debut in charge of Santos. His team lost 1-0 at home to Bahia, dropped to 17th and had striker Edmundo was sent off.

ARGENTINA

Boca Juniors' lead in the Apertura championship was cut to four points after it was held to a goaless draw away to Colon.

Second-placed Gimnasia-La Plata narrowed the gap when it beat Lanus 3-1 away while Talleres is a further point behind following its 2-1 defeat of Los Andes. Both teams have a game in hand over Boca.

San Lorenzo's Colombian defender Pedro Porocarrero was taken to hospital with concussion after a clash of heads with a rival player in the 2-1 win over Independiente. He carried on playing for a few minutes, then fell to the ground and was stretchered off.

Bottom club Almagro, where Diego Maradona has agreed to take over as general manager, lost again, going down 2-0 at home to Racing. It was Racing's first win in the championship and left Almagro as the only side without a victory after 12 matches.

Maradona is still in Cuba, where he has spent most of the year receiving treatment for addiction to cocaine. Almagro president Dardo de Marchi finalized the deal on a trip to the Caribbean island last week.

MEXICO

New signing Luis Hernandez scored for the second game in a row for his new club America.

The Mexican international's injury-time winner gave America, the country's richest and most powerful club, a 2-1 win over UNAM.

America remained third in group four of the championship's first stage, but is only two points behind UAG with one game in hand. Pachuca stayed top of the group with a 3-1 win over UAG.

Cruz Azul's 3-1 win over Morelia took it top of group one, ahead of Toluca on goal difference after the defending champion lost 3-2 at Irapuato.

The leadership also changed hands in group three, where Necaxa went top with a 2-1 win away to Monterrey. It overtook Santos Laguna, which was held 3-3 away to struggling Guadalajara.

The 18 teams play each other once in the qualifying stage but are split into four groups.

URUGUAY

Old rivals Nacional and Penarol continued to dominate the championship's second stage, both teams winning at the weekend to maintain unbeaten records.

Nacional comfortably overcame Paysandu 2-0 even though half its regular players are in Bolivia with the national team, acclimatizing to the high altitude before a World Cup qualifier in two weeks' time.

Veteran Ruben Sosa opened the scoring in the 25th minute and Pablo Islas added a second one minute later.

Penarol beat Juventud 2-1.

Nacional, which won the championship's first stage, is one point ahead, but has played 12 games against its rivals' 11.

PERU

Second stage leader Sporting Cristal hammered Juan Aurich 7-0, helped by a first-half hat-trick from Brazilian striker Palhinha and two second-half goals from Venezuelan international Daniel Noriega.

Universitario remained one point behind after a 3-2 win over Cienciano in which it recovered from being two goals down.

Brazilian Eduardo Esidio scored the winner after his cousin Nelson Esidio had provided the pass for Gustavo Grondona to score the equalizer.

Alianza Lima, the third member of the country's big three clubs, continued to struggle. It was held to a goaless draw by Sport Boys in a Lima derby and remained sixth in the 12-team table.

PARAGUAY

Francisco Ferreira scored four goals in Cerro Porteno's 7-0 demolition of Cerro Cora. The win earned Cerro Porteno a place in the semifinals of the championship's second stage with two matches to spare.

BOLIVIA

Oriente Petrolero went three points clear at the top in the championship's second stage. Oriente beat Wilstermann 2-0 while second-placed Union Central suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Bolivar, which has had a miserable season so far.
