United extends lead Champs beat Derby County, maintain Premiership leadUpdated: Sunday November 26, 2000 9:41 AM
LONDON (AP) -- Manchester United moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 3-0 beating of struggling Derby on Saturday. Goals by Teddy Sheringham, Nicky Butt and Dwight Yorke at Pride Park gained the Reds' 11th victory to give Alex Ferguson's team 36 points from 15 games. Second place Arsenal, 28 from 14, is in action on Sunday at Leeds when fifth place Liverpool goes to Newcastle. Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was sent off in a 2-1 loss at Everton for elbowing Michael Ball. The Dutch forward was ejected playing for his country two weeks ago against Spain. The result meant Chelsea's abysmal away form continued even though Claudio Raneiri's team took the lead at Goodison Park through Sam Dalla Bona. Goals by Danny Cadamarteri and Kevin Campbell turned the game around for the Toffees and Chelsea remains in the bottom half of the standings. By contrast, promoted Ipswich continued its amazing climb by winning 3-2 at Manchester City and moving up to third ahead of Leicester, which lost 3-0 at Tottenham with Les Ferdinand scoring all three. Deon Dublin gave Aston Villa an early lead against his former club, Coventry, only for Moroccan forward Mustapha Hadji to level in a 1-1 tie at Highfield Road. A late equalizer by Paul Ince earned Middlesbrough a 2-2 tie with fellow struggler Bradford as Bryan Robson's team, on the back of seven losses in a row, hit back from two goals down despite having Argentine winger Carlos Marinello sent off on his debut. After Dean Windass and Benito Carbone had scored for Bradford in the first 10 minutes at the Riverside Stadium, the visitor, which had new manager Jim Jeffries in charge, appeared on course for its first away win. But Ugo Ehiogu replied for his first goal in Boro colors and Ince struck to gain a valuable point. Alex Rae scored Sunderland's match-winner at Charlton while West Ham, about to lose star defender Rio Ferdinand to Leeds United, won a five-goal thriller at Southampton with strikes by Frederic Kanoute, Stuart Pearce and Trevor Sinclair. Ferdinand, hired for 18 million pounds (US$27 million) as the world's most expensive defender, was at Elland Road on Saturday having a routine fitness check and Leeds hopes to introduce their new signing to the fans at the game against Arsenal. Jean Tigana's Fulham moved nine points clear at the top of division one after a 2-1 victory over Grimsby. Second place Watford was unable to play against Burnley because its Vicarage Road field was waterlogged. Hibernian squandered a chance of cutting Celtic's eight-point lead to six in the Scottish league when it conceded a late equalizer at St. Mirren. After John O'Neil had given Hibs a seventh minute lead, Steve McGarry leveled for The Buddies. The big match in Scotland is on Sunday when Celtic visits Rangers, which is 15 points behind in fourth place. A Celtic win would put Martin O'Neill's team even further ahead of its big Glasgow rival and also 10 points in front of Hibernian.
