MORELIA, Mexico (AP) -- Morelia crushed Irapuato 7-2 Sunday to become the eighth participant in the quarterfinals of Mexico's winter soccer championship.

Morelia never let up on Irapuato during the game, played before 40,000 fans at Morelos Stadium in this central Mexican city.

Honduran Carlos Pavon shined, scoring three goals while Brazilian Alex Fernandez took the other two and Carlos Morales made the final points.

Pavon scored in the 23rd minute with a long shot from the right. Seven minutes later Fernandez made it 2-0 with a head shot. Pavon answered back in the 31st minute, scoring off a pass from Mario Ruiz.

Pavon scored again two minutes later on a pass from Fernandez before Ramiro Briseno put Irapuato in the game with a head shot in the 39th minute.

But Fernandez came back with Morelia's fifth goal in the final minute of the first half.

Argentine Christian Morales scored in the 51st minute for Irapuato.

But Carlos Morales, of Morelia, sent in to relieve Fernandez, delivered the final blows in the 68th minute and in the 90th minute on a penalty shot.

Irapuato joins seven other teams that have already qualified for the quarterfinals: Cruz Azul, Toluca, Necaxa, Pachuca, America, Santos and Atlas. That round starts next week.
