NEW YORK (AP) -- Sun Wen, the top scorer and most valuable player in the 1999 Women's World Cup, was among five Chinese players who signed Wednesday with the Women's United Soccer Association.

Midfielder Liu Ailing, goalkeeper Gao Hong, and defenders Wen Lirong and Fan Yunjie also signed with the WUSA, which starts play next April.

The five have not yet been assigned to teams. The league will have franchises in Atlanta, Boston, Carolina, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay area and Washington.
