LONDON (Reuters) -- Portugal midfielder Luis Figo, the world's most expensive player, has been named World Soccer magazine's player of the year.

Figo, who moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid for $53 million in the summer, earned 26 percent of the votes from readers of the widely respected English language magazine.

Juventus midfielder Zinedine Zidane finished second in the poll ahead of AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko. The results are published in the magazine's latest edition due out Friday.

Figo, Zidane and Brazilian Rivaldo have been shortlisted for FIFA's world player of the year award to be announced in Rome next week.

World Soccer magazine has been choosing a player of the year since 1982 while FIFA's edition, produced from the votes of 130 international coaches, began in 1991.

Rivaldo won both awards last year.

Former Italian national coach Dino Zoff won World Soccer's manager of the year award for taking Italy to the final of Euro 2000.

European champions France won the team of the year award, ahead of Olympic and African champions Cameroon.
