MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez will miss Manchester United's FA Cup match at Fulham this weekend after coming down with the flu, the club said Friday.

Dutch 'keeper Raimond van der Gouw will step in for Barthez for the third-round tie at Craven Cottage.

Meanwhile, striker Teddy Sheringham could return to action against Fulham after making a successful comeback from injury.

Sheringham, who has missed United's last five games with hamstring trouble, scored in the 4-4 friendly Thursday night with Wrexham. The England forward played just over 60 minutes before coming off.

United's first-team coach Jimmy Ryan, who was in charge at the Racecourse Ground in the absence of Alex Ferguson and Steve McClaren, felt Sheringham was ready.

"I think Fulham could be a possibility and we will wait and see if there is a reaction, but I can't imagine that there will be," he said. "It was nice for Teddy to get a goal and it's his season for scoring goals."

Jaap Stam and Andy Cole also made comebacks following Achilles operations, while Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich made his return from surgery on his hernia.

"It's another step for all of them and really I think they are all pretty close now," Ryan said. "We had planned 45 minutes for Stam and Coley and an hour for Teddy and it was absolutely perfect."

Dwight Yorke or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have to make way to accommodate the return of Sheringham. Paul Scholes is a doubtful starter after limping out of the 3-1 New Year's Day win over West Ham, while Denis Irwin returns from an ankle injury and Luke Chadwick is available again after serving a one-match ban.
