Late strikes save big teams Salako rescues Charlton in FA Cup upset vs. DagenhamUpdated: Saturday January 06, 2001 2:49 PM
LONDON (AP) -- A deflected, late John Salako equalizer prevented Charlton suffering the humiliation of an FA Cup upset at home to semipro Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday. After Junior McDougald had given Dagenham the lead, the Premier League team was 1-0 down at home with four remaining when former England forward Salako fired a shot that struck a Dagenham defender and spun past the 'keeper to earn the Addicks a 1-1 tie and a replay. The goal denied Garry Hill's side the honour of being the first minor league side to win at a top flight team in the FA Cup since 1986. "They were lucky to get a draw - we deserved the win," said Dagenham and Redbridge goalkeeper Tony Roberts. "They will not fancy it at our place in the replay." In a third round that promised plenty of upsets, several other big teams came up with late goals to stay in the competition while semipro Kingstonian provided the shock result by winning 1-0 at division three Southend to reach the fourth round for the first time. Yeovil, which had knocked out 20 teams from the league, led 1-0 at four-time titlist Bolton which hit back for a 2-1 win. But Chester went down 2-0 at division one Blackburn and Morecambe was outplayed 3-0 at home by Premier League Ipswich. Division one Crystal Palace held out for a 0-0 tie at Sunderland, which is third in the Premier League, while division three Leyton Orient kept Spurs at bay for 89 minutes before conceding a goal to Gary Doherty for a 1-0 loss. "It's nice to see a Tottenham side keep a clean sheet, and I'm very pleased with the defense," said Tottenham manager George Graham. Everton trailed division one Watford 1-0 with eight minutes remaining but hit back to win 2-1 through Stephen Hughes and Steve Watson, although American striker Joe-Max Moore was ejected for a second yellow card. Both sides ended with 10 men. "Late or not we dominated the second half," said Everton manager Walter Smith. Sylvain Wiltord scored early for Arsenal for a 1-0 win at Carlisle, which is last in division three but other big names found it a lot easier. FA Cup holder Chelsea crushed division two Peterborough 5-0 with two goals from Gianfranco Zola, who celebrated his recall to the team in style. "It nice to score goals for the fans and it's nice to see the team playing well," said the Italian, who was left out of the side that beat Aston Villa 1-0 on New Year's Day. "There are no easy games today, you have to make it easy. Obviously if Chelsea play at their best, they [the opposition] can't do much about it," he added. "Playing at home we've been very good throughout this season and certainly we know the FA Cup is very important so we're focusing on it. "But hopefully we can get a few results away from home and put ourselves in a better position in the league as well." Chelsea is currently ninth in the Premier League, 20 points behind leaders Manchester United. Liverpool outplayed Rotherham 3-0 with Emile Heskey hitting two, and Leicester overcome York 3-0. Others found it a little tighter. Leeds edged division one neighbor Barnsley 1-0 through Mark Viduka's early strike, and Manchester City and Derby downed Birmingham and West Bromwich Albion 3-2 after leading 3-0. West Ham had ousted Walsall from the League Cup and did the same in the FA Cup by winning 3-2 at the Bescott Stadium helped by two goals and an assist by Frederic Kanoute. Glenn Hoddle's Southampton needed a Jason Dodd penalty to get past division one Sheffield United 1-0 but Coventry won 2-0 at division two Swindon through Craig Bellamy and Moroccan forward Mustapha Hadji. The most intriguing matchup of the third round is Fulham, runaway leader of division one, at home to Manchester United, which is 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League and seemingly on course to its seventh title in nine seasons. Last season, United controversially skipped the competition to take part in the FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil. Newcastle, losing finalist in 1998 and '99, hosts last season's runner up, Aston Villa. The Scottish Premier League has started a three-week winter break with Celtic nine points ahead of Hibernian and defending titlist Rangers 12 points off the lead. Details of FA Cup games involving Premier League clubs: Carlisle 0, Arsenal 1 (0-1) French forward Sylvain Wiltord collected a defense splitting pass from countryman Patrick Vieira to race clear and shoot the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute. Vieira later became the victim of a two-footed lunge by Carlisle's Richard Prokas, who appeared lucky to stay on the field but was unpunished by the referee. Charlton 1, Dagenham and Redbridge 1 (0-1) American Junior McDougald netted his ninth goal of the season two minutes before half time to set up the possibility of an upset. But John Salako broke the Dagenham hearts with a deflected shot from 25 yards (meters) with four minutes to go. Chelsea 5, Peterborough 0 (2-0) After Peterborough had gone close to taking the lead, Gianfranco Zola collected a free kick and lobbed the goalkeeper in the 37th minute to start the Chelsea goal rush. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added the second from a Dennis Wise pass a minute before half time, Eidur Gudjohnsen scored the third in the 72nd, Gustavo Poyet struck two minutes later and Zola netted his second six minutes from the end. Derby 3, West Bromwich Albion 2 (1-0) Malcolm Christie tapped in two minutes before half time for his ninth goal of the season, Stefano Eranio volleyed home in the 53rd from a Danny Higginbotham cross and Christie put Derby in command with his second in the 75th. Leeds 1, Barnsley 0 (1-0) Australian striker Mark Viduka fired the only goal of the game in the a ninth minute from an Eirik Bakke cross. But off-form Leeds squandered several more chances against managerless Barnsley, who went close in the second half to salvaging a replay. Leicester 3, York 0 (0-0) Gary Rowett gave the Foxes a 57th minute lead after Matt Elliott had headed on a corner by Muzzy Izzett, who netted the second from the penalty spot after a foul on Trevor Benjamin by Kevin Hulme. Richard Cresswell added the third against his old club in the 73rd minute with a diving header from Andy Impey's cross. Leyton Orient 0, Tottenham 1 (0-0) Spurs' run without an away win since April 19 seemed to be continuing before defender Gary Doherty turned home Darren Anderton's inswinging corner in injury time. Liverpool 3 Rotherham 0 (0-0) After a first half struggle against division two Rotherham, Liverpool turned on the style despite having Igor Biscan sent off for second yellow card. Emile Heskey headed in Michael Owen's run and cross two minutes into the second half and Danny Murphy's passes set up further strikes for German midfielder Dietmar Hamann and Heskey in the 73rd and 75th minutes. Manchester City 3, Birmingham 2 (2-0) With Paolo Wanchope unavailable Andy Morrison returned to the home team's strikeforce to give Joy Royle men an 18th minute lead. Darren Huckerby added the second in the 31st after a run past three defenders and Shaun Goater's penalty two minutes before half time stretched the lead to 3-0. But the Blues hit back through Martin Grainger in the 57th minute and Dele Adebola four minutes later to scare the home team. Morecambe 0 Ipswich 3 (0-1) Marcus Stewart put Ipswich ahead in the 14th minute, scoring for the fourth game in a row and Alun Armstrong turned in Fabien Wilnis' cross in the 65th minute. The non-league team's challenge was eventually ended when Jermaine Wright fired in from Gary Croft's pass 15 minutes from the end. Southampton 1, Sheffield United 0 (0-0) Jason Dodd fired Saints into the fourth round from the penalty spot 18 minutes from the end. Blades goalkeeper Simon Tracey failed to hold on to a 30-yard shot from Wayne Bridge and upended James Beattie as they challenged for the loose ball. United's Bobby Ford was sent off for disputing the decision. Sunderland 0, Crystal Palace 0 The visitor's Hayden Mullins was sent off in the 57th minute for retaliating to a challenge by Gavin McCann. But it came 10 vs. 10 near the end when Staislav Varga was ejected for tripping Dougie Freedman. Swindon 0, Coventry 2 (0-1) Craig Bellamy fired the Sky Blues ahead in the fifth minute after dispossessing Robins' defender Sol Davis. Mustapha Hadji added the second in the 64th minute by tapping in a sideways pass from fellow Moroccan Youssef Chippo. Walsall 2, West Ham 3 (1-1) Frank Lampard put the Hammers ahead in the sixth minute from Frederic Kanoute's pass only for Darren Wrack to level for the Saddlers in the 33rd. Kanoute headed home a Joe Cole cross and made it 3-1 nine minutes from the end before Brett Angel gave the Hammers fans some anxious late moments with a second strike for Walsall. Watford 1, Everton 2 (1-0) Tommy Mooney gave the Hornets the head from Gifton Noel-Williams flick on in the 21st minute for his 15th goal of the season. Watford defender Robert Page was sent off for his second yellow card eight minutes from the end and, from his foul, Stephen Hughes fired in a 25-yard free kick equalizer. Everton striker Joe-Max Moore was sent off after needlessly kicking the ball away after an offside decision and seeing a second yellow card. But Steve Watson headed home a cross from Niclas Alexandersson to put the Toffees into round four and take their minds off their lowly league position.
