ROME (Reuters) -- Swede Sven Goran Eriksson, the incoming coach of the English national team, has resigned as coach of Lazio, Italian news agency ANSA reported Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Lazio was unable to officially confirm the report but said the club would make a statement shortly.

Eriksson has signed a contract to take over as coach of England on July 1, but he could now be free to take over sooner.

Eriksson's position at Lazio was thrown into doubt following the shock 2-1 home defeat to lowly Napoli on Sunday, which left the Italian champions 11 points behind leaders AS Roma.
