Di Canio trashes treble West Ham wins 1-0, boots Man Utd out of FA CupUpdated: Sunday January 28, 2001 1:18 PM
MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- West Ham's Paolo Di Canio put Manchester United out of the FA Cup Sunday with a brilliant 76th-minute goal and a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. The flashy Italian took a pass just onside and broke into the box to the left of Manchester United goalkeeper Fabian Barthez, beating him with a low shot from a sharp angle to shock a sellout of 67,000. It was West Ham's first victory at Old Trafford since 1986 and put the Hammers into the fifth round -- the final 16 -- of England's most important club competition. Man United had scored 20 goals in its last five games against West Ham. It was Manchester United's first loss in an FA Cup match at Old Trafford since 1989. In a later match, FA Cup holder Chelsea scrambled to a 4-2 win over first division Gillingham in their fourth round tie at the Priestfield stadium after coasting comfortably through the first half. Chelsea's former Ajax midfielder Jesper Gronkjaer scored twice after Iceland's Eidur Gudjohnsen had been gifted a third-minute goal to give the visitors a 3-0 halftime lead. The match changed character after the interval when Gillingham introduced Iffy Onuora into the attack. Onuora troubled the Chelsea defense immediately and was instrumental in Paul Shaw's 50th minute goal. Gillingham surged back and in the 66th minute Chelsea's unsettled French defender Frank Leboeuf brought down Shaw. Carlo Cudicini deflected Nicky Southall's free kick but Onuora was on hand to score. Gillingham pressed hard but with a minute of injury time to play Gudjohnsen put the result beyond doubt with his second goal. In the fifth round, Chelsea make the short trip to London rivals Arsenal who won 6-0 at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. In another fourth-round game Sunday, first-division Bolton hammered third-division Scunthorpe 5-1 with a hat trick from Dean Holdsworth and two from Kevin Nolan. On Saturday, Liverpool reached the fifth round with a 2-0 victory at Leeds with goals from Nicky Barmby and Emile Heskey. Premier League rival Arsenal also got through, dumping first-division Queens Park Rangers 6-0. The major casualty in Saturday's fourth round was Premier League Everton, which went down 3-0 at home against first-division Tranmere. Non-conference Kingstonian sprang a surprise, drawing at second-division Bristol City 1-1 to force a replay. Leicester also continued Aston Villa's woes. Villa, winless in five straight league game, lost 2-1 to the Foxes. In all other fourth-round FA Cup games Saturday: Blackburn 0, Derby 0; Crewe 0, Stockport 1; Manchester City 1, Coventry 0; Southampton 3, Sheffield Wednesday 1; Sunderland 1, Ipswich 0; Wycombe 2, Wolverhampton 1. Much of the suspense Saturday took place in two third-round replays. Premier League Charlton needed 30 minutes of extra time to beat a stubborn non-league Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0. In the other third-round replay, first-division Wimbledon -- playing with 10 men at the end -- also scored in 30 minutes of overtime to oust second-division Notts County 1-0. Redknapp hoarse with excitement after winWest Ham manager Harry Redknapp almost lost his voice on Sunday as his east London side upset FA Cup favourites Manchester United 1-0 in their fourth round tie at Old Trafford. "Manchester United are a fantastic team, we played well... my voice has gone from shouting," he said in a television interview. "We had an awful lot of injuries, it was a makeshift team. But all round it was an excellent performance." Redknapp praised the 75th minute strike from Paolo Di Canio, which gave West Ham their first win at Old Trafford since 1986 after 11 defeats at the ground. "It was a great finish from di Canio, you wouldn't want anyone but him in that position." "We worked our socks off and passed the ball very well. They are the best side in Europe but we deserved it." Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson felt his team had not taken their chances. "That is the nature of Cup ties," he said. "I have said it time and time again over the years, that it's sudden death and if you don't take your chances then you run the risk. "They picked up the game well in the second half and made it a really good Cup tie."
