ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) -- Galatasaray hit back from 2-0 down to upset defending champion and eight-time titlist Real Madrid 3-2 in a Champions Cup quarterfinal first leg game on Tuesday.

Ivan Helguera headed in a free kick from Luis Figo in the 33rd minute and, 10 minutes later, French midfielder Claude Makalele fired home a low shot for a second for the Spanish soccer powerhouse.

But the game changed around in the second half when Umit Davala fired in a 47th minute penalty after a foul by Makalele on Hasan Gokhan.

Hasan tied the game up with a low shot in the 66th and Mario Jardel then hit the 75th minute winner and Galatasaray goes to Madrid in two weeks time with high hopes of a first ever semifinal place.

Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos said his side was still confident of going through to the semifinals despite the defeat.

The European champions led 2-0 at half time in their quarter-final first leg with goals from Ivan Helguera and Claude Makelele but a desperate second period fightback saw Galatasaray win with goals from Umit Davala (penalty), a Hasan Sas strike and a Mario Jardel header.

"We played well in the first half," said Roberto Carlos. "We've got to keep calm. It's two games and there's no problem.

"We have to improve in the second leg in Madrid and I believe we'll emerge victorious."

Madrid coach Vicente Del Bosque said afterwards that Galatasaray were driven by desperation in the second half -- and it paid off for them.

"They were desperate and we lost the domination we had in the first half. It was one half of our domination and one half Galatasaray response."

"I guess we'll have to ask the players about their performance in the second half. We lost control of the ball and the game in the second half and we let them back in."

"I can't say I like the result, it turns our plans upside down. But if you look at it objectively, it gives us a chance to come back in the second leg."

Galatasaray coach Mircea Lucescu added: "We've got the chance to advance, but we're also well aware that the match there is going to be a stiff test."

"The slow tempo we exhibited was due to the fact that we only had two days to prepare for this game. I want us to have more time to prepare for the second leg."
