Celtic clinches Glasgow side claims 37th Scottish title
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- Celtic claimed its 37th league title on Saturday, defeating last-place St. Mirren 1-0 on Tommy Johnson's 38th-minute goal. Celtic clinched the title with five games to spare, the fastest wrap-up of the Scottish league title in 26 years and a victory that moved the Glasgow side 22 points ahead of No. 2 and archrival Rangers. The 60,000 sellout at Celtic Park celebrated under green banners with first-year manager Martin O'Neill, a Northern Irishman who moved from England's Leicester, hugged by all of his players including 47-goal-scoring Henrik Larsson. Johnson got the winner when Larsson found him unmarked in the box. Johnson's first touch was no good, but he recovered and slipped the ball into the net. Celtic has won two of the last four Scottish Premier League titles with the other two going to Rangers. Rangers have won the title 49 times including nine in a row in a stretch that ended in 1997. Celtic, which has also won the league cup this season, could set a European record if it wins its remaining five games and finishes with a total of 103 points. It is also on course to shatter Rangers' league record of 90 points. In a 38-game season, Celtic has won 28 of its 33 games with just one defeat, a 5-1 beating by Rangers at Ibrox Park, and the two teams must meet again before the end of the season.
