Expecting a jam Officials worried about traffic problems in Cardiff
CARDIFF, Wales (AP) -- What if they gave an FA Cup final and -- stuck in traffic -- nobody came? With London's Wembley stadium closed for renovation or demolition, the FA Cup final is being played outside England for the first time with Liverpool facing Arsenal on Saturday at newly built Millennium Stadium in the Welsh capital. Wales police expected 100,000 fans to flood the city. Fans arriving from Liverpool and north London were warned to take trains, although Welsh highway officials said Friday most seemed to be coming by car. Officials have set up a special Web site and emergency telephone number to deal with the overflow. "Supporters of both teams have been strongly advised to travel to south Wales by coach and rail, but if they do decide to travel by car they should aim to arrive at Cardiff well before kickoff," a spokesman for the Welsh Assembly's traffic center said. "However, the assembly is warning all travelers that heavy traffic on Saturday is expected to cause delays on motorways, trunk roads and some local routes in south east and south Wales. English Football Association officials have put down a new pitch for the match costing about 100,000 pounds ($140,000). The FA has a three-year contract to play the cup final in Cardiff, although there are suggestions it might be moved if there are problems.
