Denial Egypt ousts U.S. from youth championship 2-0Updated: Thursday June 28, 2001 4:20 PM
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- A penalty shot and a failed offside trap Wednesday helped Egypt defeat the United States 2-0 and advance to the quarterfinals of the under-20 World Youth Championship. Wael Reyad scored Egypt's first goal from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after U.S. substitute Brad Davis needlessly handled the ball on the edge of his area even though it was obviously going wide. Mohamed El Yamany beat the U.S. offside trap in the 88th and raced toward the area to slot ball past U.S. goalkeeper Delvin Countess to make it 2-0. Egypt goes on to play the winner of Thursday's Angola-Netherlands match. "When we came here we pledged our people to go as far as we could," said Egyptian coach Shaky Gharib. "We are now playing well and hopefully we will continue." The Americans, meanwhile, head home. "Everybody is very disappointed," said coach Wolfgang Suhnholz. "We had high hopes for this game, but they didn't come through. I thought we played well, but we just lacked that bite up front." Cheered on by about 15,000 spectators at the 50,000-capacity Jose Amalfitani stadium, the Egyptians looked the slicker and more confident side while the United States, especially in defense, seemed constantly uncertain. Egypt has its first chance in the seventh minute when a defensive mix-up left the ball in the area for El Yamany. He swerved deftly but fired the ball narrowly past the right post. The United States seemed to be sorely missing injured Nelson Buddle up front, and Landon Donovan and Conor Casey, while physically strong, proved short on ideas. In the 19th minute, left winger Ahmed Abou Moslem honed in on a defensive mistake by Bobby Convey and his effort from the edge of the area forced Countess to make a superb mid-air, cat-like save. But less than a minute later, Abou Moslem out-ran U.S. defender Gooch Onyewu into the area and collided with Countess, who held on to the Egyptian and forced a penalty. But the American goalkeeper showed his worth when he dived perfectly to the right and blocked the low shot by Gamal Hamza. The Egyptians also missed a penalty in their opening match against Jamaica. In the 42nd minute, Countess blocked three consecutive close-range shots from Hamza and Reda Shehata. The Americans' only real chance to end the stalemate in the first half came in the 45th minute. Onyewu headed the ball down from the right edge of the box and DaMarcus Beasley took the bounce in his stride but, from the penalty zone, volleyed the ball skywards. The Americans came out with more sting in their attack after the break. In the 58th minute, Beasley wheedled his way in from the left corner, past two Egyptians, and laid the ball on for Casey, who could only bang it over the crossbar. The U.S. team continued to pressure while the Egyptians seemed unable to venture beyond the halfway line. By the final quarter both sides seemed spent. Then Davis handled the ball needlessly and although Countess dived well, Reyad's shot was too fast. Alecko Eskandarian almost snatched an equalizer five minutes later when his shot went inches wide in a goalmouth melee. The United States' fortunes plummeted in the 85th when Kelly Gray was sent off with a second yellow card. Moments later El Yamany made it 2-0. The U.S. lost its first Group C match to China 1-0, but defeated Chile 4-1 in the second game. Egypt drew its opening match 0-0 against Jamaica before being trounced 7-1 by Argentina. It won its final group A match 2-1 against Finland. The biennial tournament, featuring 24 national teams, is seen as a showcase for future soccer talents.
