BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Honduras crowned a historic debut in the Copa America, defeating Uruguay 5-4 in penalty kicks on Sunday to take third place.

Reserve goalie Henry Enamorado defended a shot by Uruguay's No. 13, Carlos Gutierrez, and the Hondurans were a perfect five-for-five to take the win after a 2-2 tie in regulation time.

For Uruguay, a 14-time champion, fourth place was a respectable finish for a young team that came here without its top stars.

For Honduras, just being here was an honor. Winning was even better.

The team captured the hearts of fans everywhere with a storybook run in its first Copa America. A last-minute replacement for Argentina, the Hondurans knocked off Bolivia, Uruguay and mighty Brazil before falling to Colombia in the semifinals.

The crowd was openly in their corner, chanting "Ole" as Honduras traded passes up field.

And it was Honduras who struck first. Amado Guevara sent Saul Martinez away on the right flank, and the striker turned defender Gonzalo Sorondo around with a dribble and fired from 12 meters (yards) to put Honduras up 1-0 in the 14th minute.

Eight minutes later, Uruguay's Rodrigo Lemos took a free kick at the edge of the penalty area and found captain Joe Bizera in front for an indefensible header that made it 1-1.

In the 42nd minute, Guevara sent a free kick in from the right side that Martinez just missed with a diving header. But Junior Izaguirre, backing him up, sent a driving shot that crossed the goal line before goalie Adrian Berbia knocked it out.

Three minutes later, Uruguay drew even after a scramble in the goalie box and a rebound that Andres Martinez knocked in to make it 2-2.

Honduras held the edge in the second half as the teams traded chances, with Guevara and Martinez each missing twice from in close.

Five minutes from time, Uruguay's Fabian Estoyanoff mis-hit a rushed header over the crossbar from inside the box.

In the tiebreaker, both sides hit their first shots before Enamorado made the save on Gutierrez. Everyone scored after that, with Izaguirre blasting the final shot into the upper right corner to touch off the Honduran celebration.
