Dubai (Reuters) -- Former World Player of the Year George Weah has joined Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates on a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old Liberian international striker, whose former clubs include Monaco, AC Milan, Paris St Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Olympique Marseille, was unveiled at a press conference Sunday.

"Al Jazira Club is proud of succeeding in signing a deal with a world famous player like Weah," club director Butti Mohammed Al Qubeissi was quoted as saying in Monday's Gulf News. "We expect his presence will help the club inside and outside the field of play and as a role model, he will inspire many youngsters.

Weah, who was named World Player of the Year in 1995, said he chose to move to the Emirates rather finishing his career in the United States.

"I preferred to come to the UAE as I know that they have a good league and that some of the players who were professionals in Europe are playing here," he said. "I hope that I can do my best for my new club."

Weah joined Al Jazira after negotiations with another UAE club, Al Ain, broke down. No further contract details were disclosed.
