Minnows suffer Parma, Inter Milan reach UEFA Cup second roundUpdated: Thursday September 27, 2001 6:56 PM
LONDON (AP) -- Italian sides Parma, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Fiorentina all reached the second round of the UEFA Cup on Thursday, joined by European heavyweights like Ajax, Valencia, Rangers, Leeds and Chelsea. There was also news off the pitch on a day of three-dozen matches -- and few upsets -- in Europe's No. 2 club competition. Aston Villa was the day's big loser. The English side, which sweated through the Intertoto Cup to qualify for the tournament, won 1-0 at Varteks in Croatia but went out on the away goals rule following their 3-2 home defeat in the first leg. UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, awarded a 3-0 victory to Paris Saint-Germain after its match Tuesday at Rapid Bucharest was abandoned in extra time because of a power outage. Rapid's sporting director Paul Cazan said he would appeal the decision, which means PSG advances to the second round of the UEFA Cup. PSG led 1-0 in the 115th minute of their UEFA Cup game when the stadium and parts of the Romanian capital were thrown into darkness. The clubs had tied 0-0 during the first leg in Paris. If the score had remained unchanged until through extra time, PSG would have advanced to the second round. UEFA also fined PSG 15,000 Swiss francs (US$9,392) for leaving Bucharest before a decision was made about a replay. In some of Thursday's key matches: At Helsinki, Finland, Marco Marchionni scored in the 79th and Emiliano Bonazzoli added another in injury time as Parma defeated HJK of Helsinki 2-0 to advance on a 3-0 aggregate. Marchionni scored with a header off a free kick by Hidetoshi Nakata. The Japanese also set up Bonazzoli's goal. At Brasov, Romania, Nicola Ventola scored twice as Inter Milan defeated Brasov 3-0 to advance on a 6-0 aggregate. It was the second game for Ronaldo after returning from a ligament injury that sidelined him for more than 17 months. Andres "Guly" Guglielminpietro added the other goal in the 38th minute. At Milan, Italy, Rui Costa's early goal sparked AC Milan to a 4-0 win against outmatched BATE Borisov of Belarus to earn the Italian powerhouse a trip to the UEFA Cup's second round. In addition to Rui Costa, Spain's Javi Moreno, Senegal's Adama Sarr and Italy's Filippo Inzaghi also scored. AC Milan won the first leg 2-0. At Florence, Italy, Enrico Chiesa notched a goal and assist in a two-minute span to lead Fiorentina to a 2-1 win over Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk to qualify for the second round of the UEFA Cup. After a scoreless draw in the first leg in Ukraine, the first 74 minutes on Italian turf were also goal-free until Daniele Adani headed in a looping Chiesa free kick to give the hosts the lead. Two minutes later, Chiesa added his goal. Late substitute Yuriy Slabyshev cut the lead in half with two minutes to go. At Valencia, Spain, Valencia reached the second round by crushing Russia's Chernomorets 5-0. The Spanish side advanced 6-0 on aggregate. Two goals by Juan Sanchez and one apiece from Adrian Ilie, Salva Ballesta and Francisco Perez Rufete finished off the Russians. At Moscow, Nigerian Finidi George helped Ipswich to a 2-1 victory over Moscow Torpedo. The Nigerian fired Ipswich ahead two minutes into the second half and was fouled for the penalty that enabled Marcus Stewart to make it 2-0 in the 55th. Dmitry Viasmikin hit back for Torpedo, but the Russians went out 3-2 on aggregate. At Sofia, Bulgaria, Eidur Gudjohnsen and John Terry scored for Chelsea to give the Blues a 2-0 victory over Bulgarian champion Levski. Chelsea advances on 5-0 aggregate. Terry scored in the 33rd when he took the ball in the penalty area from a corner and slipped it behind Levski keeper Georgi Petkov. Gudjohnsen added the second in the 45th. At Warsaw, Poland, Bert Konterman scored in the 85th as Glasgow's Rangers scraped by with a 1-0 victory over Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. The match was played in the Polish capital when Rangers -- and eventually UEFA, the governing body of European soccer -- decided it was too dangerous to play in Dagestan, the war-torn region that borders Chechnya. Normally played over two legs, the series was reduced to a single leg. "At home we could have won this match with 20,000 fans on our side," said Anzhi coach Alexander Markarov afterwards. At Nicosia, Cyprus, Former European champion Ajax advanced easily to the second round with a 3-0 victory over Cypriot minnow Apollon with goals from Rafael van der Vaart, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wamberto Campos. Ajax won the first leg 2-0. At Leeds, England, English league leaders Leeds rebounded from a 1-0 loss in the first leg to defeat Portugal's Maritimo 3-0 on goals from Robbie Keane, Harry Kewell and Erik Bakke to reach the second round. At Varazdin, Croatia, Mustapha Hadji's injury time winner for a 1-0 Aston Villa victory wasn't enough to keep his team in the cup as Croatia's NK Varteks gained the second round on the away goals rule with the teams 3-3 on aggregate. Hadji curled a 20-meter (yard) shot into the roof of the net for the only goal of the game but the Croatians totally deserved its place in the second round. At Edinburgh, Scotland, AEK Athens advanced to the second round despite a 3-2 loss in extra-time to Scotland's Hibernian. AEK won the first leg in Greece 2-0 and advanced 4-3 on aggregate. Hibernian's Francisco Luna scored twice -- in the 52nd and 82nd -- to force the 30-minute extra-time period. AEK bounced back on two goals in extra time by Vassilis Tsartas with David Zitelli scoring in the 114th minute for the Scots. Lothar Matthäus' Rapid Vienna side thumped Partizan Belgrade 5-1 in Austria to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit. "This is a sensational win," said the former Germany captain. In addition to Tuesday's Rapid-PSG match, five others were played. Advancing were: Hertha Berlin, JC Roda Kerkrade, Hapoel-Tel Aviv, Maccabi-Tel Aviv, and Iirol Innsbruck.
