Liverpool stunned Grimsby upsets defending champ; Leeds blasts Leicester
LONDON (AP) -- First Division club Grimsby shocked defending League Cup holders Liverpool in a 2-1 extra-time victory, and Leeds striker Robbie Keane scored a hat trick in a 6-0 spanking of leaderless Leicester Tuesday in third-round Cup action. Newcastle, Charlton and Ipswich squeaked by with close victories against clubs from lower divisions as seven English Premier League teams advanced to the Cup's final 16. Grimsby battled Liverpool to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes at Anfield, and the heavily favored home side appeared to eek out a victory in the 101st minute when Gary McAllister converted a penalty. But Liverpool -- playing without England international stars Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard -- crumbled in the closing minutes as Grimsby's Marlon Broomes and Phil Jevons each scored. In the night's full League Cup action: Barnsley 0, Newcastle 1; Coventry 0, Chelsea 2; Crewe 2, Ipswich 3; Gillingham 0, Southampton 2; Leicester 0, Leeds 6; Liverpool 1, Grimsby 2; Tranmere 0, Tottenham 4; Watford 4, Bradford 1; and West Brom 0, Charlton 1. It took Keane only 16 minutes to net two goals at Leicester, which fired manager Peter Taylor on Oct. 1 after the club sank to the bottom of the Premiership. The Irishman set up another goal by Eirik Bakke before halftime and secured his hat trick in the 53rd minute on a three-yard (meter) tap-in after Foxes 'keeper Ian Walker deflected a strike by Mark Viduka. Viduka and fellow Australian Harry Kewell later scored goals that completed the rout. Newcastle needed 78 minutes to find a hole in the defense of the First Division's Barnsley. Welsh international Craig Bellamy took a well-placed pass from Laurent Robert and slipped the ball passed Barnslet 'keeper Andy Marriott for the 1-0 win. Chelsea also struggled to score at Coventry, as shot after shot on goal was repelled by 19-year-old 'keeper Gary Montgomery in his debut match. But Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen weaved his way into the area in the 56th minute and lifted the ball over the rookie from 10 yards (meters) to bag his fourth goal of the campaign. Finnish striker Mikael Forssell later looped a header over Montgomery after a far-post cross by Dutchman Boudewijn Zenden dropped beyond the Coventry defense. Charlton pulled ahead of West Brom early on a penalty kick by Jason Euell, awarded after midfielder Adam Chambers upended Chris Powell in the box. The penalty proved the difference as Charlton held on to win 1-0. Tottenham easily eliminated Second Division club Tranmere in a 3-0 away victory on goals by Teddy Sheringham, Darren Anderton and Gustavo Poyet. Ipswich had more difficulty at Crewe. After going ahead in the opening minutes on goal by Dutchman Martijn Reuser, the visiting Premiership team allowed Rob Hulse to equalize five minutes later. Marcus Stewart headed the ball across the area near the end of the first half, allowing Alun Armstrong to strike home the winner. Southampton notched a 2-0 away win against Gillingham; and Gianluca Vialli's Watford scored a 4-1 home victory over fellow First Division side Bradford. On Monday, Premiership team Bolton became the first to advance to the fourth round, defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 on a goal by Bruno N'Gotty. In Scottish League Cup action Tuesday, Rangers new signing Shota Arveladze marked his debut with the two first-half goals in a 3-0 win over First Division leaders Airdrie. In other matches: Aberdeen 1, Livingston 6; Ayr 0, Kilmarnock 0 (Ayr win 5-4 on penalties after extra time); Dundee United 3, St. Johnstone 2; Dunfermline 1, Inverness 1 (Inverness wins 4-1 on penalties after extra time); Raith 0, Hibernian 2; and Ross County 2, Dundee 1.
