KIEV (Reuters) -- Liverpool, playing without the guidance of manager Gerard Houllier, beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 on Tuesday, all but ending the Ukrainian side's slim chances of progress from Champions League group B.

Kiev stay rooted at the bottom of the first-phase group while Liverpool go top -- a boost for Liverpool manager Houllier recovering in hospital after heart surgery.

"We hope our victory today will give him strength and put him in a good frame of mind," said Houllier's assistant Phil Thompson, who is handling first-team duties. "We hope that in the next Champions League match, Gerard Houllier will be with us."

Danny Murphy opened the scoring for the visitors in the 43rd minute, converting a neat pass from Steven Gerrard.

Tiberiu Ghioane equalized in the 59th minute, but Gerrard sealed victory eight minutes later after beating two defenders and firing home from the edge of the area.

But the visitors did not have it all their own way. The early stages of the match saw attacking play by Dynamo, putting Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek to the test several times.

However, the Kiev side failed to capitalize on their chances.

"For 20 minutes, we came under heavy pressure. But afterwards, we managed to get the game under our control," Thompson said.

The victory puts Liverpool top of group B on eight points from four games after Portugal's Boavista, previously group leaders, lost 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Dynamo have just one point from four games.

Liverpool also become the first English team to beat Dynamo at home in any competition.

Dynamo coach Valery Lobanovsky congratulated Liverpool, saying their victory showed they were truly of European class.

"Today we have lost all chance in the current campaign for the Champions League, but this is not the end," he said.

"We are building up a new team and we need time to do this."

Thompson had said on Monday his team would stick to a game plan devised by the ailing Houllier. The Frenchman is recovering in hospital from an 11-hour emergency heart operation at the weekend.

Despite the absence of injured England striker Michael Owen, Liverpool's strategy paid off.

Koller leads Dortmund to 2-1 victory against Boavista

DORTMUND, Germany -- Czech forward Jan Koller scored one goal and set up the second Tuesday as Borussia Dortmund charged from behind to beat Portugal's Boavista 2-1 and keep alive its hopes of advancing in the Champions League.

Koller's backheel pass fed Lars Ricken that leveled the match in the 50th minute, then sidefooted in the gamewinner in the 68th minute as the German team's victory scrambled the Group B table.

Boavista, which would have been through with a victory, now has seven points and Dortmund is back in contention with five.

Ricken's goal livened up the match after a sloppy cautious first half which didn't produce a chance except the 33rd minute goal by Boavista's Alexandre Goulart.

It was the German international's first Champions League goal since scoring the 3-1 against Juventus Turin in 1997 when Dortmund upset the Italian giant to capture the Cup.

Goulart, the Brazilian midfielder, went around a pair of defenders after his touch on a long downfield kick, turned and rifled a high unstoppable shot that ricocheted in after hitting the left post.

Koller's backheel caught the Portugese defenders by surprise, with a through Ricken chipping in over the head of Boavista goalie Richardo Pereira.

After that both sides charged up and down the field, although the German side applied most of the pressure, knowing more than a draw was needed to keep its hopes of advancing alive.

In the 68th, Ricken's pass landed right in the path of Tomas Rosicky, who was dashing toward the cage. The Czech player saw the towering Kohler unmarked and the striker simply whipped a bouncing sidefooted shot inside the left post.

There were several other chances for both sides but both national 'keepers, Pereira and Germany's Jens Lehmann, made some first class saves.

Pereira's lunging save in injury time against Ricken, who had just the 'keeper to beat, thwarted what may have been the best chance that was wasted for both clubs.

Sammer 'lecture' works wonders

Borussia Dortmund breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday.

"We needed a while to find our rhythm," said coach Matthias Sammer.

"At halftime, the players needed a serious lecture. They were looking tired, not fresh at all. But I was confident things would pick up."

The victory at Westfalenstadion was Dortmund's first in Group B.

Although they remain in third place in the section, they now have five points, just two behind Boavista and a further point behind Liverpool, who lead the group on eight points.

At halftime, Dortmund had been left on the brink of elimination from the first phase after Alexandre Goulart had given Boavista a deserved lead.

But Lars Ricken's equalizer in the 50th minute spurred on the home side and Czech striker Jan Koller tapped in the winner 18 minutes later.

"We're back in the competition with this win," said goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Yet the evening proved once again how dangerously Dortmund have lived so far this season.

All five goals they have conceded in the Champions League so far have come in the first 45 minutes. The five they have scored have all come after the break.

"It's great to get a goal in such an important game," Koller said afterwards through Tomas Rosicky, his interpreter.

"Now we're up there with Liverpool and Boavista," added Rosicky himself.

"It's two out of the three of us. We won, but we've got to take the next two [games] as well."

Dortmund host bottom-placed Dynamo Kiev next week before they visit Liverpool for the final group game on October 30.

The top two clubs in each group qualify for the second phase of the Champions League, while the third-placed team drops into the UEFA Cup.
