SOFIA (Reuters) -- Bulgaria, whose 6-0 thrashing by the Czech Republic earlier this month ended their hopes of making next year's World Cup finals, have sacked coach Stoicho Mladenov, Bulgarian officials have said.

Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) spokesman Radoslav Yankoulov told Reuters on Friday the decision was taken by the BFU's executive commitee late Thursday.

Mladenov had a contract with the BFU until December 31, he said.

Bulgaria's under-21 coach Dimitar Aleksiev had also been released, Yankoulov said, but no replacement had yet been found for either him or Mladenov.

Aleksiev's contract was set to run until June 30, 2002.

"In two weeks, a special commission should make a proposal to the executive committee about a new national coach," Yankoulov said.

Earlier this month, the Sedem Dni Sport newspaper said that BFU president Ivan Slavkov hoped to persuade Dimitar Dimitrov, who coached the national team until 1999, to return to the job.

Dimitrov is coach of Lokomotiv Plovdiv, currently second in the national league.
