PORTO, Portugal (AP) -- Portugal's FC Porto advanced to the second phase of the Champions League on Wednesday, beating Norway's Rosenborg 1-0.

The win gave FC Porto second place in Group E on 10 points, and left Rosenborg bottom with four.

The Portuguese team dominated the first half, allowing Rosenborg few shots at goal. FC Porto's forwards pounded the Norwegian goals with strike after strike but could not get past goalie Arni Arason, who pulled off superb saves.

But in the 37th minute, Clayton Cruz crossed into the area and Brazilian striker Renivaldo de Jesus "Pena" jumped high and drove home a blistering header making it 1-0.

Two minutes later, the Portuguese team blasted three shots at the Norwegian goals in 10 seconds but each was blocked by a defender and Arason's brilliant reflex saves.

But FC Porto couldn't keep the pressure up in a dull second half. Underdog Rosenborg played a spirited game but made few counter attacks against the much stronger team.

Bent Johnsen came close to equalizing one minute into injury time but did not make his header count in a goalmouth scramble.

"Justice was done," said Porto coach Octavio Machado.

Porto had 14 shots on the Rosenborg goal in the first half prompting Machado to add: "We created a series of chances for goals but there was a great keeper there."

Said Rosenborg coach Nils Arne Eggen: "I'm ashamed at what happened in the first half."

"Porto were much better than us. There's no comparison, but you mustn't forget we're at the end of our season."

Celtic beats Juventus but settles for UEFA Cup

GLASGOW, Scotland -- Chris Sutton scored two goals to help Celtic to a 4-3 win over Juventus in front of a vocal crowd at Parkhead on Wednesday, but it was not enough to qualify the Scottish champion for the second round of the Champions League.

Celtic needed to win and for Rosenborg to hold Porto to a draw in Portugal to take second place in group E. But Porto won the match 1-0 to advance, giving Celtic the consolation prize of a UEFA Cup place.

In an entertaining match, Joos Valgaeren and Henrik Larsson also scored for Celtic and David Trezeguet scored two goals to add to Alessandro del Piero's first half strike.

Porto had seven points coming into Wednesday's game, with Celtic on six and Rosenborg 4. Juventus had already qualified for the final 16 stage.

Del Piero opened the scoring with a curving 25-yard (meter) free-kick in the 19th minute which swooped into top corner of the Juventus goal, out of the reach of Celtic 'keeper Robert Douglas.

Lubo Moravcik, who had his first start in the Champions League Wednesday, played a key role in Celtic's play. He crossed for Valgaeren to score the first with a diving header in the 24th minute and took the corner that led to Sutton heading the second in first half injury time.

Del Piero was substituted with Trezeguet at halftime and the Frenchman made an immediate impact, equalizing in the 51st minute by driving a Nicola Amoruso cross from the edge of the area past Douglas into the bottom corner of the net.

Six minutes later, Celtic went ahead with a Larsson penalty. Moravcik took a corner but French referee Giles Veissiere yellow carded Juve defender Mark Iuliano for jostling with Sutton in the box and granted Celtic a penalty. Larsson fired past Carini into the left hand corner of the net.

Sutton scored Celtic's fourth in the 63rd minute with a long range volley that left Carini stranded. Trezeguet responded in the 77th minute by pouncing on a loose ball on the edge of the goal area and firing home.

Juventus started without Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids, who injured his thigh in the pre-match warmup and was replaced by Alessio Tacchinardi.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, whose side was playing in the Champions League for the first time, refused to be downcast.

"Against a top quality side like Juventus I could not have asked for any more," he told ITV Sport.

"It was magnificent from start to finish. We went a goal behind came roaring back again and scored four here at Celtic Park.

"I thought the fans were in a for a real treat and they got it."

Celtic finished third with nine points, having won all three home games in the group. Porto grabbed the second qualifying spot for the second group stage with 10 points, one less than Juve who had already qualified.

"We've won all three [home] games in the competition at our first attempt. It wasn't to be, but it's been a terrific effort by all the players," said O'Neill.

Celtic win praise from Juventus coach Lippi

Celtic were praised by Juventus coach Marcello Lippi for their courageous bid to snatch a place in the second group phase of the Champions League.

The Scottish champions failed despite beating the Italians 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at Celtic Park.

Lippi acknowledged that Celtic -- they were beaten only 3-2 in Turin by a disputed last-minute penalty -- had caused the group winners more problems than any other side.

"The first game in Turin was really tough, but tonight they created even bigger problems for us," said Lippi.

"Besides being strong, Celtic are well organized and have two outstanding attackers in [Henrik] Larsson and [Chris] Sutton and they could do well in the UEFA Cup."

Said O'Neill: "My players have done this club proud. I could not ask for more.

"We played great football and so did Juventus, but it was a disappointing way to end the evening.

"To put a team like Juventus under so much pressure and score four times was incredible. Lubomir Moravcik was magical and Chris Sutton immense, but there is real disappointment in the dressing room."
