LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Maritimo dashed Boavista's hopes of going to the top of the Portuguese Premier League on Sunday, winning 1-0.

The win left Boavista fourth on 26 points and moved Maritimo into joint sixth. Maritimo's Brazilian striker Andre Moreira drove home a scorching shot in the 32nd minute after breaking through Boavista's defense on a surprise counterattack.

Brazilian Mario Jardel netted two goals earlier Sunday to help Sporting go to the top on 29 points with a 4-0 win against Varzim.

Midfielder Ricardo Quaresma opened the scoring in the second minute. Varzim kept up a spirited defense and goalie Henrique Hilario pulled off a superb save from Jardel's driving header in the 19th, but Jardel made it count slamming one home a minute later. The top four teams are now separated by only four points.

Varzim stayed bottom with only two wins this season.

Jardel made it three in 30th, with his 16th goal of the season, keeping his position as top scorer.

Elsewhere, Leiria thrashed Salgueiros 7-0, pushing Leiria into fifth and costing Salgueiros two places leaving them 16th. Derlei's four goals took his season's total up to 10, making him the third highest scorer this season.

Guimaraes moved up a place to joint sixth with a 3-2 victory against Alverca. Alverca stays 17th.

Santa Clara beat Setubal to take 13th place on a 1-0 win, which pushed Setubal down a place to 13th.

  • On Saturday, FC Porto went down to a stinging 2-0 defeat by underdogs Guimaraes.

The loss knocked Porto off the top to second place while Guimaraes moved up a place to fifth.

In the second minute, Marco Couto headed in a Marco Fangueiro free kick. In the 45th, Fangueiro set up a second when the Porto goalie couldn't hold his cross and Nuno Assis drove it home.

Benfica's first defeat of the season was at the hands of minnows Pacos Ferreira, whose 2-1 win pushed them into 11th place from 15th.

The stunning victory dropped Benfica to third. Pacos Ferreira's Jose Manuel da Silva dribbled past the defense to open scoring in the 12th, but Joao Manuel Pinto equalized a minute later.

Lobato Ribeira "Leonardo" made it 2-1 in the 26th with his ninth goal of the season.

Elsewhere, Sporting Braga beat Beira Mar 3-2 with Beira Mar's Fary Faye scored his 12th goal this season, putting him second behind Jardel.
