South Korea sets out for Gold Cup

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea's 25-man national soccer squad left Tuesday to participate in the 12-nation Gold Cup championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

In the first round, South Korea plays United States on Jan. 19 and Cuba on Jan. 21 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The United States and South Korea meet for the second time since they were drawn to the same first-round group with Portugal and Poland on Dec. 1 for this year's World Cup soccer finals.

In the latest friendly match on Dec. 9, South Korea beat the United States 1-0 at Seogwipo, one of its 10 World Cup venues. South Korea will co-host the World Cup with Japan on May 31-June 30.

South Korea and Ecuador were invited to compete in the Gold Cup as guests. Other participants are Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Martinique, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Canada and Haiti.
