San Lorenzo tops Clausura Posted: Wednesday February 20, 2002 5:13 AMBUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Two goals from veteran striker Alberto Acosta placed San Lorenzo on top of the Clausura soccer league Tuesday, as the Buenos Aires side beat Banfield 2-0. Also in action Tuesday were Lanus, who won 2-0 against Huracan, and Belgrano, who beat Velez Sarsfield 2-1 in Cordoba. The match between champions Racing Club and Rosario Central was suspended after police warned they could not guarantee security for the game. The results leave San Lorenzo with seven points from three games. Belgrano are joint second with six points from three games, alongside River Plate who have played one less game. It was no vintage display by San Lorenzo, who won the 2001 Clausura league, as they struggled to find their form in a dour first half dominated by poor passing and heavy defense. But the home team quickened their pace in the second half as coach Manuel Pellegrini added an extra striker and sent creative midfielder Walter Erviti onto the pitch. With 10 minutes of play remaining, San Lorenzo got their breakthrough when Franco found space on the right flank and looped a center into the heart of the area, which Acosta headed over goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti into the Banfield goal. The home team wrapped up the points six minutes later when Banfield defender Javier Sanguinetti gave away a free kick, which Acosta drove into the bottom right corner of Lucchetti's goal. Meanwhile Belgrano made it two consecutive wins when they beat Velez 2-1. Mauro Obolo put the local boys ahead after three minutes, but Velez leveled the game just before halftime when Belgrano keeper Juan Carlos Olave failed to catch a corner, letting the ball drop to Fabricio Fuentes, who headed home. The home side clinched the win in the 67th minute when Sebastian Brusco finished off a move started by Mariano Guzman, driving the ball into the net past Velez keeper Gaston Sessa. Tuesday's other winner was Lanus, whose 2-0 victory over Huracan was their first of the season. Lanus' goals came from Hernan Pages in the second minute and Diego Bustos in the 72nd.
