Champions League final facts, figures Posted: Monday May 13, 2002 6:36 PMGLASGOW (Reuters) -- Facts and figures ahead of Wednesday's Champions League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid: Wednesday's match is the 47th European Cup final and the third at Hampden Park -- but the first there for 26 years. - - - The first was on May 18, 1960 when Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in what is generally regarded as the best club match in history. The second was on May 12, 1976 when Bayern Munich completed their hat trick of European Cup triumphs with a 1-0 win over St Etienne of France. - - - The attendance at the 1960 final is officially listed as 134,000 -- a record for the competition. - - - Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen have met four times previously with Real winning three times with one match drawn. Their previous meetings were all in the Champions League: March 4, 1998: Leverkusen 1 Real Madrid 1; March 18 1998: Real Madrid 3, Leverkusen 0; Sept 27 2000: Leverkusen 2, Real Madrid 3; Oct 17, 2000: Real Madrid 5, Leverkusen 3. - - - Spain's victories in the final are: Real Madrid (1956-57-58-59-60, 1966, 1998, 2000) and Barcelona (1992). Victorious German teams have been: Bayern Munich (1974-75-76, 2002), SV Hamburg (1983) and Borussia Dortmund (1997). - - - Beaten Spanish teams: Barcelona (1961, 1986, 1994) Real Madrid (1962, 1964, 1981), Atletico Madrid (1974), Valencia (2000, 2001). Beaten German teams: Eintracht Frankfurt (1960), Borussia Moenchengladbach (1977), SV Hamburg (1980), Bayern Munich (1982, 1987, 1999). - - - German and Spanish clubs have a good recent record in the competition. Bayer Leverkusen are the fourth German finalists in the last six seasons, while Real Madrid are not only making their third appearance in the final in five seasons, but are also Spain's fifth finalist in five seasons. There was an all-Spanish final in 2000 when Real beat Valencia. - - - This is the fourth final between German and Spanish clubs, including West German clubs until 1990. The previous matches were: 1960: Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt (7-3); 1974: Bayern Munich v Atletico Madrid (4-0 after 1-1 draw) and 2001: Bayern Munich v Valencia (5-4 on penalties after 1-1 draw). - - - When Bayer Leverkusen won the UEFA Cup in 1988 they beat Espanyol of Spain to do so. - - - This is the last chance for both clubs to win honors this season. Both failed to win their domestic League titles and both lost in their domestic cup finals. - - - If they are successful on Wednesday Real will win the European Cup for an unprecedented ninth time in their 12th final appearance in their centenary year. The next most successful club in terms of victories is AC Milan with five. - - - In all, Real Madrid have won 58 major honors in their 100-year history including the Spanish title 28 times and been champions of Europe eight times. In contrast Bayer Leverkusen have only won two major honors in their 98-year history. They lifted the UEFA Cup in 1988 and the German Cup in 1993. - - - Leverkusen will become the first team ever to become champions of Europe without ever winning their domestic league title if they win. They have become the 36th different club to reach the European Cup final and are bidding to become the 24th different club to be crowned European champions. - - - Leverkusen is the second smallest city ever to provide a European Cup finalist with a population of only 165,000. The smallest ever city to do so was Bruges in 1978 (pop 115,000). - - - Four Real Madrid players will be attempting to make history by becoming the first to win three finals since the competition replaced the old European Cup in 1992-93. Roberto Carlos, Raul, Fernando Hierro and Fernando Morientes all played in Real's triumphs of 1998 and 2000. - - - Morientes, Raul and Steve McManaman will also be attempting to become the first players to score in two different Champions League finals after all three scored in the 3-0 2000 win over Valencia. - - - However, the overall record for victories in the history of the European Cup final is held by another Real Madrid player: Francisco Gento who played in Real's first six final victories in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1966. - - - If he is in the Leverkusen team as expected, Yildiray Basturk will become the first Turkish player to appear in the Champions League final. - - - Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane will become the 11th player to appear for two different clubs in the Champions League final after having previously played for Juventus in the 1997 final against Borussia Dortmund and in the 1998 final when Juventus lost to Real Madrid. - - - Raul of Real Madrid is the highest scorer in the 10-year history of the Champions League with 33 goals in 65 matches including five this season. But Michael Ballack, playing his last match for Leverkusen before his move to Bayern Munich, is the current top scorer in the competition this season of players still left in. He has scored six goals in 14 appearances. - - - The overall scoring record in the European Cup/Champions League is held by another Real Madrid player -- Alfredo Di Stefano who scored 49 European Cup goals. Along with Puskas he also holds the record for the number of goals scored in the final -- 7. Di Stefano scored one goal in 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959 and three in 1960. Puskas scored four in 1960 and three in 1962. - - - Real coach Vicente Del Bosque is bidding to become the 13th man to win the European Cup twice. The record of three wins is held by the late Bob Paisley of Liverpool (1977, 1978 and 1981).
