BLACKBURN, England (AP) -- American World Cup goalkeeper Brad Friedel has committed his long-term future to Blackburn Rovers by agreeing a new four-year contract, the club announced Friday.

The performances of the 32-year-old goalkeeper made him one of the standout players of the tournament as the United States made it to the last eight, only to lose 1-0 to Germany.

"I had worked with Brad before and I knew he was right for this club," said Rovers manager Graeme Souness, who hired Friedel in November 2001.

"Rovers fans have known for some time how influential and capable he is, but I've known for years. His performances last year were exceptional and his World Cup displays outstanding. But I wasn't surprised a bit. He is very important to our squad and our plans, it's good news all round."
