LIVERPOOL, England (Reuters) -- Lee Bowyer is set to join Liverpool after the Anfield club Friday agreed a fee with Leeds United for the midfielder's services.

Bowyer, who has refused to sign a new contract at Elland Road, will discuss personal terms with Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier after the weekend.

"We've given Lee permission to talk to Liverpool," Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale was quoted as saying on the club's website, which said the fee was about 9 million pounds (US$13.97 million).

"Terry Venables (the new Leeds manager) did have a chat with Lee, but his agent called on Thursday night to say nothing has changed.

"Liverpool have made an offer that's acceptable to us and the rest is now in Lee's hands. How quickly the deal goes through is up to him and Liverpool to agree personal terms and go through the medical."

A Liverpool spokesman added: "They have given us permission to talk with the player and that will happen in the early part of next week."

Bowyer's Leeds contract was due to expire at the end of the coming season.

"He only had a year to go on his contract and something had to be done," Ridsdale said.

"Obviously we don't want to lose Lee, but he's made his decision not to sign a new contract."

Bowyer's fortunes at Elland Road have fluctuated wildly.

Regarded as a great talent, he was instrumental in guiding the club to the semifinals of the European Champions League in 2001.

But he was in the headlines last December when he was cleared of all charges relating to an attack on a student in Leeds city center in January 2000.

His Leeds teammate Jonathan Woodgate was found guilty of affray by Hull Crown Court and sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

Lawyers acting for the student, Sarfraz Najeib, said in April they had issued a civil action against Bowyer in the wake of the court verdict.
