Korean exodus Reysol striker Hwang linked with move to MetroStarsPosted: Wednesday August 14, 2002 10:54 AMUpdated: Wednesday August 14, 2002 11:06 AM TOKYO (Reuters) -- The South Korean exodus at Kashiwa Reysol is to continue with World Cup striker Hwang Sun-hong scheduled to leave at the weekend, the J-League club confirmed on Wednesday. Hwang, who has made over 100 appearances for his country, has been hampered by a back injury since the World Cup in South Korea and Japan this year, where the co-hosts became the first Asian team to reach the semifinals. The combative forward has been linked with a move to the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in U.S. Major League Soccer. The 34-year-old is the third South Korea international to depart from Kashiwa in the past 12 months after World Cup captain Hong Myung-bo and midfielder Yoo Sang-chul, who left Reysol last month to look for a club in Europe. Kashiwa fired English manager Steve Perryman last week after a run of six consecutive defeats and are currently 12th in the 16-team first division with one match left to play in the first stage of the season. The MetroStars have just seven games remaining in the MLS regular season and have their limit of three international players. MLS operates under a strict salary cap that prevents the signing of many high-priced international players. The Los Angeles Galaxy also expressed interest in signing a Korean player after the World Cup.
