Cycling Roundup Rumsas could be questioned in ItalyPosted: Wednesday August 21, 2002 11:42 AMPARIS (AP) -- Italian investigators, at the behest of their French counterparts, will likely question a Lithuanian cyclist caught in an alleged doping scandal next week, a lawyer said Wednesday. Attorney Alexandre Varaut said that cyclist Raimondas Rumsas, who has said he did not want to come to France out of fear he might be arrested, may be questioned at his home in Tuscany next week. Varaut represents Rumsas' wife, Edita, who was arrested at the French border on the last day of the Tour de France with alleged doping agents in her car. She was jailed on July 28 after police allegedly caught her with a stash of doping products, including the performance-enhancer EPO and testosterone. She was taken into custody the same day that her husband finished a surprising third in cycling's most grueling event. Lance Armstrong won the race for the fourth straight year. An appeals court in the Alpine city of Chambery, meanwhile, on Wednesday said it would issue a decision on Aug. 28 on a request to free Edita Rumsas. Last week, a judge in the eastern town of Bonneville ordered her to remain behind bars. Jalabert wins Coppa Agostoni road raceLISSONE, Italy (AP) -- French veteran cyclist Laurent Jalabert edged Italy's Gianni Faresin in a two-way sprint at the finish line Wednesday to win the Coppa Agostoni -- the second of three consecutive cycling races held in northern Italy. The 33-year-old Frenchman of Team Tiscali, who has collected more than 140 wins since turning professional in 1989, completed the 198-kilometer (121.5-mile) distance in four hours, 56 minutes, 21 seconds. Massimo Giunti of Italy beat Spain's Oscar Sevilla for third place, 56 seconds behind the winner. Eddy Ratti, winner of Tuesday's Tre Valli Varesine in Varese, finished sixth. Dario Frigo, who triumphed in a World Cup race at Zurich last Sunday, was a distant 27th, 1:39 minutes behind. The third race of the week, the Bernocchi Cup, is scheduled for Legnano on Thursday.
