LONDON (Reuters) -- Ipswich Town crushed Avenir Beggen 8-1 and former European champions Red Star Belgrade trounced Kairat Almaty 3-0 in the UEFA Cup qualifying round on Thursday to book their places in the first round proper.

Hapoel Tel Aviv, whose fairytale run in the UEFA Cup last season was ended in the quarter-finals by AC Milan, also went through to Friday's draw after a 4-1 second leg win over Partizani Tirana in Albania.

Scotland's Aberdeen and Livingston both edged into the first round, but Swedes IFK Gothenburg, who won the UEFA Cup twice in the 1980s, were dumped out by Zimbru Chisinau of Moldova.

The place to be for goals was Portman Road, where Ipswich demolished their Luxembourg opponents with a hat-trick from Spanish striker Pablo Counago and two from Tommy Miller.

Darren Ambrose, John McGreal and Wayne Brown also got on the scoresheet for the first division club, while Gregory Molitor headed Beggen's consolation goal.

Comparing Thursday to their first leg performance, Ipswich manager George Burley said: "We created a lot more space, we passed it better and we got the ball to the strikers' feet more.

"It was good to score eight goals."

Ipswich, UEFA Cup winners in 1981 and whose run to the third round last season was ended by Inter Milan, completed a 9-1 aggregate win after their 1-0 away victory.

Red Star, European Cup winners in 1991 and who held a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Kazakhstan, were 1-0 up on the night when Kairat had Ali Aliev red-carded in the 43rd minute.

The Belgrade side went on to score two more for a 5-0 aggregate win.

Happy Hapoel

Hapoel returned to the European stage after building on their 1-0 victory in the first leg with a late flurry in the second against 10-man Partizani.

Hapoel, who knocked out Chelsea on their way to the last eight, also celebrated a famous 1-0 win over five-times champions Milan last season before going down 2-0 in the second leg at the San Siro.

Beaten 3-1 away in the first leg, IFK Gothenburg bowed out after a 2-2 draw with Zimbru Chisinau, despite their opponents losing Ilie Balasa to an eighth minute red card for a scything tackle on Gothenburg defender Magnus Erlingmark.

A low shot from Thomas Rosenkvist put the hosts in front, before Zimbru's Levan Gvazava finished off a superb run with a snap shot in the 33rd minute.

Two minutes later, Boris Cebotari put Zimbru ahead with a shot off the post -- only for Rosenkvist to get his second of the night within three minutes.

"I am very pleased. I had never thought that we'd go through against such a strong team," said Zimbru coach Gabriel Stan.

"They played two very good games," said Gothenburg boss Stefan Lundin, as fans shouted for his resignation.

Aberdeen's 0-0 draw in Moldova against Nistru Otachi earned them a 1-0 aggregate win, but the most fortunate side to get through were fellow Scots Livingston after a 0-0 draw.

At the very end of the match, 10-man Vaduz of Liechtenstein had the ball in the Livingston net -- only to discover the referee had blown the final whistle in the seconds between their corner being taken and Daniele Polverino firing home.

Livingston went through on the away goals rule, having drawn the first leg 1-1.

The draw for the first round of the UEFA Cup is made Friday, with matches starting on Sept. 19.

Teams with automatic entry into the first round include Belgium's RSC Anderlecht, Denmark's FC Copenhagen, English clubs Chelsea, Leeds United and Blackburn, Spain's Celta de Vigo and 2001 finalist Alaves, Paris Saint Germain, Germany's Schalke 04, Italy's Verona, Parma and Lazio, Portugal's Porto and Scotland's Rangers.

They join clubs who failed in the last hurdle of qualifying for the Champions League including Glasgow Celtic, Austria's Sturm Graz and Grazer AK, Denmark's Brondby, Sporting Lisbon and Turkey's Fenerbahce.

The UEFA Cup final is on May 21 at the Olimpico stadium in Seville, Spain.
