Brazilian defender joins Vienna

LA CORUñA, Spain (Reuters) - Deportivo Coruña have agreed to loan Brazilian midfielder Djalminha to Austria Vienna for this season, the Spanish first division club said on Saturday night.

Djalminha, who played a key role in Depor's run to the league title in 2000, has dropped down the pecking order at the club owing to the good form of Juan Carlos Valeron.

He was in the starting line-up for the Galician club in only five league matches last season.

Deportivo said that his new club would have an option to buy Djalminha at the end of the deal if he played more than 70 percent of the remaining matches in the Austrian league.

The mercurial 31-year-old playmaker, who joined Depor from Palmeiras in 1997, is known for his fiery temper.

He head-butted coach Javier Irureta after an argument in training last May. The player later apologised and appeared in several games towards the end of the season, but was still left out of the Brazilian squad for the World Cup.

Deportivo said Djalminha had been keen to get regular games and that the loan deal had been negotiated with Irureta's permission.
