Users sound off on World Sport XI

Posted: Wednesday September 04, 2002 6:29 PM

The following is a selection of user responses to the second annual edition of the World Sport XI, a ranking of the best players in the world at their respective positions for the 2001-02 season.

What on earth is Ronaldo doing in your team? I can name dozens of strikers who are better than him. Kluivert, Tristan, Solskjaer and Van Nistelrooij for instance. These strikers have also performed much better than your man Raul. And what magnificent performance has Zidane been showing us lately do deserve his spot? His lucky goal in the Champions League final? Just because players are Brazilian, French or from Real Madrid doesn't mean they're good players.

I want to know why Rustu Recber of the Fenerbahce and the Turkish national team was left off this poll. His only slip-up was the goal that was scored when Alpay committed a foul in the box against Brazil (a very questionable call I must add). He led his country to a third-place victory in the World Cup. Unlike Oli Kahn, he didn't have two slip-ups against the same player (Ronaldo) in the same game!
Zazu, Atlanta

Brazil are the world champions and that's why half thair team must be in our World XI. That's what the people at CNN must have thought. Apparently, they've never seen Brazil play, because if they had, they wouldn't have named Lucio, who blundered against England. And Roberto Carlos is more good as a left-forward than as a defender. And can anyone tell me why Cafu is in the team? What good has he done? And Diego Tristan and Ruud van Nistelrooij have scored a lot more goals than the highly overrated Ronaldo and Raul. And if you want to choose the player with the best free-kick in the world, take Pierre van Hooijdonk and not Beckham. Finally, out with the most arrogant and overrated player of the world, Zinedine Zidane. He's done no good last year.
Dragoslav, Novosibirsk

Well, there's a lot of replacing to do here. Let's start by replacing Lucio and Cafu for real defenders Frank de Boer and Placente. And what good has Zidane done this year apart from scoring in the Champions League final? Zidane out, Helguera in. And your srikers make me laugh: Ronaldo? He's done NOTHING except scoring eight crappy goals in the World Cup. How about Ruud van Nistelrooy? He scored 23 times in the Premier League and was top scorer in the Champions League; now that's what I call a striker. And Raul, away with him and replace him with Henry, cause he sure knows how to score.
Gijs, Groningen

Robert Pires should have been choosed in that best XI and he should replace Freddie Ljunberg (who is often only a substitute for Arsenal). And Pires was elected player of the year by the English journalists... not Ljungberg!
Christophe, Paris, France

Though Roberto Carlos is an exceptional talent, he was not at his peak last season. I am also surprised to see Liverpool's Stephen Henchoz missing out as also is Germany's Metzelder both were in great form throughout last year. Manchester United's dutch star Ruud Van Nistelrooy was in superb form and he is also not in your eleven.
vinodh, Chennai, India

I think this team looks good but there are some things missing in it like in the goalkeeper position. Oliver Kahn din't do that well at the 2002 World Cup, while Rustu Recber did absolutely amazing saving some amazing shots. In defense the center and right back have to be changed. I mean Cafu, he is ancient; he is too old to be in a team like this, so someone like Lilian Thuram should take his place because he has really proved his best in club level for Juventus. In the center back instead of Lucio it really should be someone like Edmilson; he was teriffic at the World Cup, especially with one of the goals of the tournament on an overhead kick. Now the midfield... it is really pointless having Freddie Ljungberg there when you can put in such stars like Rivaldo and Luis Figo. He should be on the bench. In the strikers Ronaldo is a very good option, but Raul should not be there because he is only world class because he has very good players behind him in midfield, so someone like Van Nistelrooy there or maybe Andriy Shevchenko.
Yaroslav Bashenko, Kiev, Ukraine

Rio Ferdinand? no way he shouldnt be there it has to be sami hypia he is the best defender in the world, and i feel Raul as good as he is shouldnt be there as well i dont think he had the greatest of seasons and i think he should be replaced by Christian Vieri
Abbas Rajwani, London

What is this team? Where is Christian Vieri, the man scored 22 goals in 24 league games, and 4 goals in his 4 world cup games, and then you speak about Raul. Rio ferdinand!!!! is he really better than Thuram and Nesta. This isn't the best team, this may be the Cnn's favourite team, but surely not the best.
chadi, lebanon

It is absurd that of the four Brazilians to make the list, one was an offensive player and three were defenders. No doubt they're all fine players, but it was the creativity of Rivaldo and Ronaldinho that led to Brazil hoisting the cup.
Peter Klam, Antwerp, Belgium

Three Brazilians in the top four defenders? you must be joking right? RC yes, cafu maybe, but Lucio? Maybe the fact that Germany allowed only one against goal in six matches in the WC doesn't say much. I could give at least ten defenders who deserve that spot more than Lucio and Cafu.
patrick, Basel

Zidane and carlos deserve their spots, but I really think leaving Ronaldinho out after that superb goal that secured Englands exit isn't right. Surely Ronaldinho has played better than Beckham in recent times.
Edgar, Lagos, Nigeria
