Sporting suspend unsettled Jardel Posted: Friday September 13, 2002 6:06 AMLISBON (Reuters) -- Sporting have suspended Brazilian striker Mario Jardel, Europe's top scorer last season, after he failed three times to attend medical examinations. "Also, 30 days have passed since his first medical certificate was tendered to justify his absence from work, so the contract between Sporting and Mario Jardel is automatically suspended by law," a club statement said. Jardel told a news conference last month he could no longer face playing in Portugal and was depressed after separating from his wife. Sporting have rejected a proposal from Real Betis to loan Jardel to the Seville side, saying it was "humiliating to say the least for a player who has won the Golden Boot." The Brazilian scored 42 goals last season and helped Sporting to the Portuguese league and cup double, but he has not played a game this season. Jardel's success last season was followed by a double blow with the separation from his wife and his failure to be selected for the Brazilian squad which won the World Cup.
