Kenna recalled by Ireland

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) -- Ireland manager Mick McCarthy on Tuesday recalled striker Jeff Kenna to the squad for next week's Euro 2004 qualifier against Switzerland.

Kenna, 32, last played for Ireland three years ago in the Euro 2000 play-off against Turkey, which ended 0-0. The Swiss match will be played at Landsdowne Road in Dublin on Oct. 16.

Kenna moved to English club Birmingham City six months ago and captained the team to promotion to the Premier League through the playoffs.

"With Steve Finnan and Stephen Carr ruled out by injuries, Jeff gets his chance and I'm sure he will be very pleased as he has been such a long time out of the frame," McCarthy said.

Newcastle's Andy O'Brien was also named after missing last month's 4-2 defeat by Russia in Moscow in the opening Group 10 qualifier because of shin splints.

"I have spoken to (Newcastle manager) Bobby Robson and he has informed me that Andy has a hamstring problem -- but we'll just have to wait and see how he progresses," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said he would stick with Gary Breen and Kenny Cunningham in central defense despite the strong performances by Manchester United's John O'Shea, 21.

"John O'Shea has done very well for Manchester United this season," McCarthy said. "That's why he is in the squad and putting pressure on those vying for the central defensive roles."

Without influential captain Roy Keane, who was sent home after falling out with McCarthy, Ireland reached the second round of the World Cup before losing to Spain on penalties. Keane has refused to rejoin the team while McCarthy is manager.

Switzerland leads group 10 qualifying with 3 points, followed by Russia (3 points), with Albania, Ireland and Georgia all scoreless.

Ireland squad -- Shay Given (Newcastle), Dean Kiely (Charlton), Nick Colgan (Hibernian), Ian Harte (Leeds), Gary Breen (West Ham), Gary Kelly (Leeds), Kenny Cunningham (Birmingham), John O'Shea (Manchester United), Andrew O'Brien (Newcastle), Phil Babb (Sunderland), Matt Holland (Ipswich), Colin Healy (Celtic), Mark Kinsella (Aston Villa), Lee Carsley (Everton), Rory Delap (Southampton), Stephen McPhail (Leeds), Kevin Kilbane (Sunderland), Robbie Keane (Tottenham), Clinton Morrison (Birmingham), Damien Duff (Blackburn), Gary Doherty (Tottenham), Jeff Kenna (Birmingham).
