Roberto Carlos stakes claim for Golden Ball award

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Brazilian star Roberto Carlos said his glittering achievements on the field this year merit soccer's prestigious Golden Ball player award.

The left back said that his triumphs with Real Madrid in the Champions League on May 15 and the following month with Brazil in the World Cup could hardly be bettered.

"I'm the only player in the world who has won everything within the space of 48 days. What more can I do? I've won the Champions League, the World Cup and the European Super Cup in the same year. Nobody else has," Roberto Carlos said in an interview with the sports daily As Tuesday.

The prize to the best European-based player has been bestowed annually by the magazine France Football since 1956.

It results from a survey of European journalists and is awarded at a ceremony in December.

Despite most winners being attacking or midfield players, Roberto Carlos is rated as one of the favorites, although while Madrid teammates Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Raul Gonzalez are also likely front runners.

"If I win the Golden Ball or the FIFA World Player of the Year award it would be to lock up my career with a golden key. There are people who see me and say "how nice you are". I don't want to be remembered as nice, I only want to be remembered as a good soccer professional," the 29-year-old added.

Last year's winner was Liverpool's England international striker Michael Owen.
