Italian Roundup Udinese, Bologna tie 0-0; Brescia downs Torino 2-0Posted: Saturday November 02, 2002 8:23 PMMILAN, Italy (AP) -- Goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca and the posts salvaged Bologna from its second defeat of the season as the visiting team escaped with a goalless draw Saturday at Udinese. In the only other match of the day, Torino 'keeper Luca Bucci could not do anything with a close-range header from Albanian striker Igli Tare and a shot by Ghanian midfielder Stephan Appiah that gave Brescia a 2-0 win on the road at Turin's Delle Alpi stadium. The sixth loss of the season, the second in a row since Torino signed coach Renzo Ulivieri to replace sacked Giancarlo Camolese, left the Turin team in next-to-last place in the table, with three points (1-0-6). Brescia improved to 2-2-3 and tied Udinese at eight points in the lower half of the table. At the Friuli stadium in Udine, Pagliuca, a former Italian national team and Inter Milan goalkeeper, made decisive saves on short-range shots by Danish midfielder Martin Jorgensen and Italian striker Roberto Muzzi. When he could not reach the ball on a powerful drive by Jorgensen in the 54th minute, the posts helped him. The ball hit the left post, ran along the netline, bounced on the opposite post and back into the field to the disappointment of the home crowd. Bologna, coming off its first loss of the season against Serie A leader Inter Milan last Sunday, moved into a 12-point third-place tie with Juventus ahead of Sunday's seventh-round matches, which feature Inter at Serie A newcomer Como, runner-up AC Milan playing host to Reggina and Juventus at Modena. Inter Milan, which had a clearcut 3-0 win in a Champions League match against Rosenborg last Wednesday, enters Sunday's round with 16 points (5-1-0), three ahead of its crosstown rival. Bologna had one first-half goal by defender Cristian Zaccardo disallowed following a questionable referee decision. German international Carsten Jancker, who joined Udinese in the off season, continued his scoring drought as he was tackled by Bologna defender Michele Paramatti when he had his best chance in the 73rd. In Turin, Tare headed in the opening goal in the 31st minute off a corner kick for his second goal this season. Veteran star-forward Roberto Baggio masterminded Brescia play and made decisive moves. His diagonal shot in the 86th minute, slapped by Bucci, allowed Appiah to seal Brescia's victory. Newly signed Costa Rican defender Gilberto Martinez cleared a short-range header by Marco Ferrante off the Brescia goal line in the 45th minute. Before kickoff of Saturday's matches, players and fans observed one minute of silence for the victims of the strong earthquake which hit central and southern Italy last Thursday.
