Boniek quits Polish national job Posted: Tuesday December 03, 2002 9:31 AM
WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Zbigniew Boniek resigned Tuesday as coach of Poland's national soccer team following poor displays in friendlies and Euro 2004 qualifying matches over the past five months. Boniek took charge of the national team in July after Poland's first-round exit from the World Cup, replacing Jerzy Engel. The 46-year-old former start striker, who led Poland to a third-place finish at the 1982 World Cup, told the PAP news agency he had been considering his resignation for several weeks. But Polish soccer federation chairman Michal Listkiewicz called the resignation "unexpected." He said a new coach will be appointed after a Dec. 20 meeting of the coaching department and the board of the federation. Poland played five matches under Boniek, beating only San Marino and New Zeland while losing to Latvia and Denmark and drawing with Belgium. The Poles are currently third in Group 4 behind Latvia and Hungary after two matches. An unconvincing 2-0 win over San Marino in their group opener was followed by a dismal 1-0 home defeat to Latvia. As a player, Boniek won 80 caps for Poland, scoring 24 goals. He spent part of his career in Italy, playing for Juventus and AS Roma. |
