BREMEN, Germany (AP) -- The Bundesliga's leading marksman, Werder Bremen's Ailton, is under investigation for bodily harm charges after hitting his girlfriend following a match, it was announced Tuesday.

Ailton, a 29-year-old Brazilian forward, admitted hitting his longtime girlfriend after Werder Bremen was beaten 2-1 by Hannover 96 on Saturday and expressed his regret at the action.

"I regret this incident deeply and know that it can't happen again since I'm against any form of violence," said Ailton, who tops the German first division with 16 goals.

Police are still investigating the case, in part because his girlfriend did not drop the charges before leaving Germany and heading to Mexico.

Ailton has promised to contribute 5,000 euros ($5,317) to a center for abused girls and women.

Bremen officials said the forward was frustrated after Saturday's loss, part of a deep slide for Bremen, in which it has tumbled from second in the table to seventh.
