CARDIFF, Wales (AP) -- Wales and Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy has been "severely chastised" by his club for allegedly racially abusing a bouncer in a "drunk and disorderly" incident at a Cardiff night club.

Bellamy, in Cardiff preparing for Wales' upcoming Euro 2004 qualifiers, remained under police investigation Tuesday.

The incident occurred late Sunday night, with Bellamy reportedly ejected from the club and thrown down a flight of stairs. He allegedly used racial epithets against a club bouncer of Asian heritage.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said Bellamy had been "severely chastised."

"Craig Bellamy was involved in a drunk and disorderly incident in the early hours of Monday morning in a Cardiff city center nightclub," Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said.

"We are extremely concerned about this and the player saw [manager] Bobby Robson in person. He was warned as to his future behavior and told to remember at all times his high profile position at the football club."

Shepherd said Bellamy's behavior would be "under constant future scrutiny" at Newcastle.

Bellamy's father drove his son back to Newcastle early Monday morning, but after talks with Robson and Wales manager Mark Hughes, the player returned to rejoin the squad in Cardiff that night.

Wales, which has won its first three qualifying matches and tops Group 9, plays Azerbaijan in Cardiff on Saturday and Serbia and Montenegro on Tuesday.

Bellamy's mother, Angela, claimed the night club incident was unprovoked.

"He's not injured and he should be able to be play, but he was just very shocked and upset," Angela Bellamy told the Western Mail newspaper.

"People may love him or hate him but he is just a young man and it is sad that he can't go out without this sort of incident. He is always being picked on."

Bellamy has been in trouble off the pitch before. He was cautioned for common assault and fined 100,000 pounds ($157,000) in February last year after a woman alleged he attacked her outside a Newcastle night club.

In November 2001, Bellamy was fined and sent home from a Spanish training camp for failing to attend an official dinner.
