Coach Halilhodzic to quit struggling Rennes

PARIS (AP) -- Rennes coach Vahid Halilhodzic will quit the struggling first division side at the end of this season, a statement said Monday.

He is the favorite in the competition to become Paris Saint-Germain's new coach next season.

Rennes is in serious relegation trouble with only two rounds of matches left. It has 36 points and is only one place ahead of the three relegation places.

"Vahid Halilhodzic announced to the directors of Rennes his intention not to renew his position as the club's coach when this season ends," a statement from the club said.

Bosnian Halilhodzic hopes to help the Brittany side avoid the drop into the second division before he leaves.

According to a report in the sports daily L'Equipe, he was due to meet Paris SG's future president Francis Graille on Monday afternoon to discuss the coaching position there.

Graille hopes to persuade Halilhodzic to take over when current Paris SG coach Luis Fernandez steps down at the end of this season.

The pair have worked together before.

Graille was Lille president when Halilhodzic coached the Northern French side two years ago.
